Here is a fact-based summary of the story contents:

When you think of Game Freak, Pokmon is the franchise that immediately comes to mind. They have recently dipped their toes into the Soulslike pool, however, with their latest title: Beast of Reincarnation. Beast of Reincarnation releases on August 4th, and reviews have officially dropped. Unfortunately, though, they appear to be relatively mixed.

Beast of Reincarnation Review Scores

Beast of Reincarnation is an interesting endeavor for Game Freak, which has been focusing on Pokmon games for so long that the monster-collecting RPGs have become synonymous with the studiountil now. Beast of Reincarnation is a fast-paced Soulslike-inspired ARPG combining sword-based combat with parrying, exploration, and a post-apocalyptic setting. But now that review scores are in, it looks like Game Freak's experiment hasn't totally won over critics.

While at first glance, review scores suggest that Game Freak's risk may have paid off, Beast of Reincarnation appears to have some significant weaknesses. Critics seem to agree for the most part that the game's combat is one of its biggest strengths, but opinions are a little more divided when you dig deeper into the world, its storytelling, and the overall pacing of the experience.

In Giovanni Colantonio's review for Polygon, he praises Beast of Reincarnation's strong combat systems while noting that it "feels like a game thats trying a little hard to be taken seriously." Wesley LeBlanc of Game Informer celebrated Beast of Reincarnation's combat as well, but criticized certain aspects of the world, stating that they left him feeling "nothing." Stephen Tailby of Push Square has a similar opinion, stating that "while the narrative isn't particularly enthralling and it suffers from some visual and technical issues, the combat is a highlight, focusing on parries and a mix of melee and pseudo-turn-based commands that feels fun to balance."

At the time of writing, Beast of Reincarnation has a Metacritic score of 73 based on 49 critic reviews. This isn't terrible, by any means, and there does seem to be some genuinely good parts of Beast of Reincarnation. The game's most common comparisons are titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Stellar Blade, so if you're a fan of those, this may be a winner for you. The question, however, is whether or not Beast of Reincarnation does enough to establish an identity of its own and escape Pokmon's shadow.

Beast of Reincarnation's Strength Is Its Combat

Beast of Reincarnation places considerable emphasis on timing, parrying, dodging, and exploiting enemy openings. Emma's swordplay is combined with her furry friend Koo's companion abilities, creating a combat system that surpasses the more traditional protagonist/companion setup. This is Beast of Reincarnation's strength, and it's the point where critics have been mostly positive.

If combat is your priority, Beast of Reincarnation looks to give a great first impression. Its parry-focused combat system combined with Emma's companion abilities and the need to learn enemy behavior are constantly among the most praised aspects of the game, but if you're looking for a deep and engaging narrative or an entrancing world, you might have to keep looking.

Beast of Reincarnation is available on PC now, with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions following on August 4th. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch, so if reviews aren't leaving you feeling too confident about Game Freak's latest major RPG outside the Pokmon franchise, that could be a cost-effective way to check it out!
