How do apps, devices and TVs capture my data?

Updated: 23 January 2023

Any BBC apps you download to your mobile or TV can access certain data on your device.

Some data gets collected automatically, like:

  • The types of mobile device youre using
  • A unique identifier (like the device ID or an IP address)
  • Info about how our apps are being used.

This lets the app remember you and give you whatever content youve asked for.

Some apps will ask for your permission (consent), to use your data to provide additional features. For example, the BBC Weather app asks to use your devices location, (Town/City level), to give you, local weather. The BBC Weather app does not share your devices location. Your devices location or searched location is stored on your device for a period of 4-6 hours, the BBC does not store your information. You can turn this on or off at any time via your devices settings.

To be on the safe side...

Make sure you read the permissions section of any app before you download it. Its the best way of understanding exactly what data it will capture.

Apps may store info on your device too

For instance, if you download a programme in the iPlayer mobile app, itll get stored on your device.
