Poundland brings back 1 rule for shoppers five years after it was axed

Poundland has brought back a 1 rule in UK stores amid a huge shake-up and 68 store closures. Poundland, which is headquartered in the Black Country, plans to increase the number of products sold in store for a quid.

The Willenhall based retailer will roll out 1, 2, 3 grocery pricing across all stores in phases between now and September. Eventually, the number of grocery items sold at 1 will increase to 60 per cent.

20 per cent of goods will be sold at 2 and another 20 per cent will be sold at 3. Barry Williams, managing director, said: "Customers have told us loud and clear during these trials that they will back a simpler, more focused Poundland that keeps its promise of amazing value.

"Weve heard them, and the clear success of our pilot is why Im confident that a Poundland thats focused on the simple value our customers expect, can have a bright future.

It comes five years after the business ditched its 1 price limit. Industry research group GlobalData estimates that its market share has fallen 2.3 percentage points (ppts) between 2019 and 2024.

Poundlands parent group, Pepco, said it put the group up for sale after the governments increase in national insurance and business rates in April, which it said would add further pressure to Poundlands cost base.

One former Poundland director, said the brand had lost its way by becoming far too complicated and confusing for customers with such an array of different price points.

Barry Williams, Poundlands managing director, said sticking to the 1 price point had prevented it from selling products that customers had to visit rival stores to buy.

The chain billed the move as switching from being a single price to a simple price retailer.

At the time, Williams said: This is a way to broaden our proposition in a measured way that stays true to why people love Poundland.
