We're on a mission
to normalise and humanise mental health
With lived experience at our core, we aim to create a society where there is no stigma around mental health and people have clear pathways to support.
The difference we make
What we do
Chasing the Stigma is a national mental health charity on a mission to normalise and humanise conversations about mental health, while ensuring that everyone in the UK can access clear pathways to support, whenever and wherever they need it.
We want to create a society where there is no longer a stigma associated with mental health, where people are as comfortable talking about their mental health as their physical health, and where everyone is able to find appropriate support before they reach a point of crisis, leading to a significant long-term reduction in self-harm and suicide.
We aim to achieve this through:
-
Our pioneering Ambassador of Hope mental health training services
-
Awareness-raising campaigns and lobbying activities
-
The provision of the UK’s largest and most comprehensive directory of community mental health services, the Hub of Hope.
20K+ Given mental health training
We delivered our Ambassador of Hope training to over 20,000 individuals across the UK alone, equipping them to with the tools and knowledge to effectively signpost those who need support and help anyone dealing with a mental health crisis
The Hub of Hope lists over 14,000 services that are regularly monitored following guidance from our quality assurance documents, making it the UK's biggest and most comprehensive mental health service finder
14K Services listed on the Hub of Hope
We help 300,000 users to find and access mental health support through the Hub of Hope every year, averaging more than 25,700 active users every month.
300K+ People suported every year
With over a million searches for help a year, we're giving more options of hope to people than ever before and ensuring the pathway to mental health support is clear
1M+ Searches for support
With lived experience
at our core
Chasing the Stigma was established by CEO and founder, Jake Mills, following his own battle with depression and suicide attempt in 2013.
During his recovery, Jake went public about his mental health issues, speaking out on social media and to regional and national media. As he did, he was flooded with messages from people who were also struggling and who - like himself - found nowhere to turn for help.
Discovering this lack of clear signposting to local and relevant support, and determined to ensure people could find the help they needed when they needed it, Jake began building a centralised database of mental health services. That database became the Hub of Hope, now the UK’s largest and most comprehensive directory of community mental health services, listing tens of thousands of services for the 300,000+ people who use it each year.
Jake continues to advocate for people with lived experience of mental health issues in the corridors of power, speaking to government, politicians and leaders in the statutory and voluntary sector to drive change in response to mental health. Through his leadership he also highlights the importance of acknowledging that we all have mental health, and empowers people to look after their own, and recognise and support it in others
We aim to humanise and normalise mental health, actively challenge the stigma associated with mental illness and remove the barriers that prevent people from seeking help.
Almost three quarters of those who die by suicide each year are not known to mental health services or have not been seen within a year previous to their death. Quite simply, people are dying without accessing the help or support they so desperately need, and we want to change this.
Our vision is to make help as easy as possible to find while creating true environments of understanding across the UK, revolutionising the UK’s approach to Mental Health.
If this resonates with you, contact us and let’s talk!

[This is an opportunity for the government to not just redesign mental health services, but transform the way it thinks about mental health altogether, putting people and earliest possible prevention at its heart.
Today's government announcement marks a positive step towards improving access to mental health support, and we welcome the commitment to expanding services and helping more people get the support they need.
But if we want to prevent people reaching crisis point, we must invest in support long before that moment. Early intervention, community-based services and the voluntary sector all have a vital role to play in building a future where everyone can access the right support, at the right time.
Mental health doesn't begin when someone walks through the doors of a hospital. It begins in our homes, our schools, our workplaces and our communities.
Our CEO, Jake Mills, has shared his response to today's announcement and why this is an opportunity to put prevention at the heart of how we think about mental health.

[ Time for a little summer reset...
Next week, our offices will be closed as the Chasing the Stigma team takes some well-earned time to pause, recharge and enjoy a slower pace.
Whether that's getting outside, spending time with people we love, or simply having a few days away from our screens, taking time to look after ourselves matters too.
We'll be closed from the 1st of August and back on the 10th August, ready to continue pushing and doing the work we care so much about.
In the meantime, Hub of Hope remains available whenever you need it, helping you explore mental health support across the UK, please check the opening hours of your chosen service.

[Strong support starts with strong support networks
Last week, our team attended the Premier League Life Skills Provider Meeting, connecting with partners from across the network to share ideas and continue strengthening the support available through clubs, families and communities.
Here's what our team had to say about the day:
"It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow providers and collaborate on shaping the upcoming season. The sessions were incredibly insightful, focusing on how we deepen parental involvement in academy education and enhance our environments to better support neurodivergence. As part of the Life Skills Curriculum, Chasing the Stigma delivers our Ambassador of Hope mental health awareness training directly to the vital support networks: parents, carers, host families, and club staff."
We're proud to be working alongside Premier League clubs to help build environments where conversations around mental health feel more confident and informed

Every year, the platform supports over 1 million searches for help, often the first step towards vital support!
But keeping the Hub of Hope running, up-to-date and accessible across the UK takes ongoing support. Thats where your organisation can make a difference.
Whether its fundraising, donating, or partnering with us, you can help ensure support remains available to everyone who needs it.

And as you plan for year end, its worth noting that UK limited companies can usually deduct charitable donations from their profits before paying Corporation Tax, making it a meaningful and tax-efficient way to give back.

[Thank you Andy!!
After 10 years of dedicated service, including the last five as Chair, Professor Andy Smith will be stepping down from his role as Chair of the Board of Trustees at Chasing the Stigma and chairing his last ever board meeting before passing on the baton.
Under his leadership, guidance, and belief in our mission, we have grown from a single idea into one of the UKs most important mental health resources.
Our CEO & Founder Jake Mills said, "His impact on the charity, our team, and the countless people we support every day cannot be overstated. On a personal level, I will always be grateful for the support Andy has shown me along the way, and while he will be sorely missed as Chair, I know his encouragement will remain with us as we continue to build on his legacy."

[Who needs to be the first to fall before we are taken seriously?
Yesterday we attended the APPG for Suicide and Self-harm Prevention, where we heard from Baroness Gillian Merron at the halfway point of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy.
Our CEO said "While it was useful to hear about some of the progress being made, it was also frustrating to hear the Minister speak about not being able to do this alone, when so many of the individuals and organisations across the country are, in reality, being left to do exactly that.
Our position has always been clear. We are here to work alongside government and partners across the sector to learn, develop, and shape the future of suicide and self-harm prevention in a way that is evidence-based and person-centred. But too often it feels as though we are being spoken to rather than listened to.
In the words of Matthew Smith from @ifucareshare , Who needs to be the first to fall before we are taken seriously? ]

[British weather, sea air and some serious arcade competition
This week we swapped our office desks for sea views and took a team wellbeing day to walk along the Wirral dock front to New Brighton, with pit stops for arcade games, lunch and plenty of laughs along the way.
(Some more competitive at air hockey than others)
Taking time to check in, reconnect and recharge as a team really matters to us. The work we do every day supports people through difficult moments so making space to look after ourselves (and each other) is just as important
Investing in wellbeing isnt time away from the mission, it strengthens it!

[Were so pleased to welcome Amy Yarker as the new Chair of our Board of Trustees
Amy shares our passion for breaking down stigma and putting people at the heart of everything we do. As we continue to grow and reach more communities, having strong, compassionate leadership helping to guide our journey is more important than ever
This marks an exciting new chapter for us and were so glad to have Amy alongside us as we continue working to normalise and humanise conversations around mental health!

[We are incredibly grateful to @liverpoolfilmoffice for the opportunity to speak at the Northern Film and TV Gala Dinner and share more about our work
Jake our CEO & founder stated: "The reaction in the room was a powerful reminder that people really do want to talk about mental health, and that these conversations don't always have to feel heavy. They can be open and shared with a smile, surrounded by friends and colleagues!"

[Last week we were invited to @unitedutilities All Colleague Event!
Connecting with our communities and partners is what makes our work so meaningful. It was fantastic to spend time with the teams, hearing more about the work theyre doing across the North West and the positive impact!
Strong partnerships help us reach more people, in more places and together we can continue making a difference to how people find support for their mental health
We look forward to continuing our work with United Utilities!
