As we integrate new acquisitions into Canva, Cloudflare lets us apply modern security standards across environments that vary between cloud-native tech startups and organizations with legacy VPNs and on-premise infrastructure. Even if they start from very different places, Cloudflare ensures their infrastructure does not hold us back. ”
Kane Narraway Senior Security Manager, Canva
Founded in 2012, Canva is one of the worlds most popular online visual communication platforms. The Canva Visual Suite offers free and paid service tiers to suit a broad spectrum of users and businesses. From students and independent designers to small-to-medium-sized businesses and global enterprises, Canva empowers anyone to collaborate across a rich variety of content types. Canva has leaned on Cloudflare to help solve key business challenges since 2016 as the company grew to establish itself as the visual communication platform of choice for over 260 million monthly users in more than 190 countries.
Canva has always prioritized several important technical capabilities to power its rapid growth:
Only Cloudflare allowed us to start with a free tier, see value, and upgrade as needed. That resonated with us as it aligns with how Canva operates.
The Cloudflare connectivity cloud helps Canva deliver all of these capabilities. Its a single, unified platform of security, connectivity, and developer services powered by a programmable global network. Canva uses the platform to build and secure applications and protect their global workforce, with less complexity and cost.
As Canvas app architecture matured to include microservices, the company needed more granular control over request handling. They chose the Cloudflare Developer Platform specifically Workers which delivers high-performance serverless computing at the network edge to process logic closer to the user without adding friction to development workflows.
We run hundreds of microservices across dozens of teams using Cloudflare to clean up legacy traffic, and offload Layer 7 logic like redirects, security headers, and other filters to the global network instead of doing it in the backend, says Michael Yates, Canvas Senior Engineering Manager.
This Workers-driven routing strategy helps Canva abstract complexity, enforce consistency, minimize the load on origin systems, making it safe for any authorized Canva developer to deploy to the Workers platform. The company has further streamlined service development and progressive deployment with Cloudflares native Terraform integration and an infrastructure-as-code (IaC) approach to traffic configuration management.
Workers lets us blur the line between the edge and our internal network, promoting developer velocity, and giving our teams a programmable layer they can use without coordinating complex backend changes, says Yates. That allows us to respond rapidly to incidents and adjust our presence on the Internet at scale.
Canva uses Cloudflare Application Security and Performance Solutions to manage growing traffic and secure public-facing web applications. More specifically, Canva uses Cloudflares Content Delivery Network (CDN), Web Application Firewall (WAF), and DDoS Protection & Mitigation. Cloudflare helps Canva ensure robust application-layer security and a timely, responsive content delivery and user experience (less than 50ms latency) across Canvas growing global footprint.
Canva also implemented Cloudflare Bot Management to protect users visual assets. This lets Canva automatically apply threat detection methods like machine learning, behavioral analysis, and JA3/JA4 fingerprinting to prevent scraper bots from stealing images, videos, and audio recordings.
Upset users and content partners would contact us and report that they had found their images on other sites, but we lacked the capacity to stop the problem internally, says Tyrrell. Deploying Cloudflare Bot Management helped us get a handle on malicious scraping and asset appropriation our bandwidth consumption dropped overnight without affecting legitimate traffic.
Always updating security, the company is progressively implementing Page Shield Cloudflares client-side protection solution to monitor and mitigate malicious script activity in their users browsers.
In addition to using Cloudflare to secure it's public applications, Canva adopted Zero Trust security principles to boost productivity and simplify security across a hybrid workforce of over 5,000 people. Cloudflares SSE and SASE services support this goal by securing access to corporate applications and environments with greater performance and IT team efficiency.
We route all of our user traffic through Cloudflare, says Tyrrell. From securing our public applications to enabling Zero Trust access across the organization and around the world, Cloudflare helps us to operate securely at scale.
Employee experiences are one crucial element of this practice. Canva employees work in offices and remotely across Australia, New Zealand, the US, the UK, Europe, and throughout Asia. Designed to run everywhere on the global network, the Cloudflare SASE platform delivers strong performance across all regions.
Cloudflare ensures we can provide secure, frictionless user access to resources without slowing people down, says Narraway. With Cloudflare protecting our 90 most critical applications everything from Salesforce to Snowflake pairing this with strong MFA means we no longer have to worry about credential theft.
This approach also helps Canva avoid risky VPN-based network security strategies. Access, Cloudflares ZTNA service, enables Canva to enforce context-aware security policies for every employee and third-party contractor. A clientless access approach fills in the gaps when issuing a dedicated Canva laptop isnt possible, e.g. with contractors. Cloudflares Remote Browser Isolation (RBI) service further prevents data loss and blocks malicious code and phishing attempts without slowing down user experiences, and its clientless deployment option accomplishes this straight from the browser.
Rather than trusting someone just because theyre on the network, we evaluate the user, their machine, and their context using Cloudflare to protect specific resources, adds Yates.
Over the years, Canva have accelerated their expansion and broadened their product portfolio, strategically acquiring companies like Leonardo.AI and Kaleido AI (visual AI tools), Flourish (data visualization and storytelling tools), and Pexels and Pixabay (media libraries). Cloudflares SASE platform and the connectivity cloud play a central role in helping the company secure and integrate new environments.
As we integrate new acquisitions into Canva, Cloudflare lets us apply modern security standards across environments that vary between cloud-native tech startups and organizations with legacy VPNs and on-premise infrastructure, says Narraway. Even if they start from very different places, Cloudflare ensures their infrastructure does not hold us back. It is an approach that allows Canva to provide secure access for newly onboarded teams and systems without delaying integration timelines.
Cloudflare provides the components we need to establish a secure access baseline from day one, giving us time to improve the long-term architecture, says Narraway.
Canva also uses Cloudflares app connector, Tunnel, to connect engineers securely to internal environments, allowing them to build, test, and iterate without creating firewall exceptions or exposing sensitive services to the public Internet.
Employing over 2,000 engineers at the top of their game, we need the freedom to experiment safely. Tunnel enables those edge cases where developers want to build and test locally, says Narraway. With Cloudflare, we can establish secure guardrails so our people can connect securely, move fast, and hold off on production until theyre ready. It aligns perfectly with how we operate.
It is an arrangement that helps Canva maintain development velocity without losing control. It also supports secure innovation across the companys growing product suite and AI-driven acquisitions.
Looking ahead, Canva seeks to expand their use of the Cloudflare platform to support AI-powered features and agile workflows across its global product suite. From running AI inference at the edge with Leonardo.AI to evaluating Cloudflares MCP server push and automation tools, Canva continues to explore emerging Cloudflare technology backed by Cloudflare support and the flexibility and reach of the connectivity cloud.
Cloudflare isnt just a vendor they are a partner in how we solve problems, experiment safely, and move fast at scale, says Yates. As Cloudflare continues to develop its products, we'll continue to examine each of them, and where it makes sense, we make them a part of the Canva platform.
Canva connects employees, protects user assets, and builds industry-leading visual communication and content creation in Cloudflares connectivity cloud.
