Menai bridge reopened with statement issued

Traffic was re-routed via the A55 Britannia Bridge

No traffic is being allowed to cross the bridge

The Menai Suspension Bridge was closed for a little over three hours this morning (Sunday, August 2) due to an ongoing incident.

All vehicles were diverted via the A55 Britannia Bridge, creating tailbacks that at one point reached 23 minutes, according to traffic websites. Afternoon A55 traffic heading east became so heavy that control measures were needed in the Conwy tunnels.

The 200-year-old crossing has seen multiple sudden closures during phase two of its repair programme. Most have been due to overweight vehicles but todays closure was described by Traffic Wales as a police incident'.

North Wales Police later stated the force wasn't involved. Clarification was sought from Traffic Wales and the Welsh Government. A statement was subsequently released - this can can be found here.
