Pilot killed in plane crash near Dunkeswell Airfield - updates

Emergency services are at Dunkeswell Airfield in Devon where a plane has crashed, killing the pilot.

Dozens of fire crews, police vehicles, and ambulances are at the airfield this morning (Friday, June 26). An air ambulance landed there earlier and took off shortly afterwards.

A police spokesman said: "Tragically, the pilot believed to be a woman in her 40s was pronounced deceased at the scene. "Nobody else was on board at the time. Her next of kin has been informed. The Air Accident Investigation Branch has been notified."

Paramedics called at 10.01am

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: We were called at 10:01hrs on Friday 26 June to an incident near Honiton.

"We sent a double-crewed land ambulance, an air ambulance, a hazardous area response team, an operations officer and a responding officer to the scene.

Pilot killed

Police have now confirmed that the pilot has been killed.In an updated statement, they said: "Tragically, the pilot believed to be a woman in her 40s was pronounced deceased at the scene. Nobody else was on board at the time. Her next of kin has been informed. The Air Accident Investigation Branch has been notified."Superintendent Jo Arundale said: We will be working closely with The Air Accident Investigation Branch to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash this morning.We recognise it is a very sad incident and we are appealing to the public not to speculate regarding the crash.Furthermore, we would like to ask anybody who may have relevant footage to get in touch with us and not to post it online."Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the person involved.Anybody with relevant footage is asked to call 101 or visit our website quoting log 268 of 26 June.

Police were called shortly after 10am on Friday 26 June following a report of a light aircraft crashing near to Dunkeswell Airfield.Emergency services attended the scene.We are continuing to work with our colleagues at The Air Accident Investigation Branch.The incident is ongoing and we will issue updates when in a position to do so.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Emergency services are currently in the Dunkeswell area following an incident which was reported at around 10am.

"Well provide further updates in due course."

What we know so far

Emergency services are responding to an incident at Dunkeswell Aerodrome this morning.

We first started to get reports that police and fire crews were at the scene at around 10.30am. Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, the South Western Ambulance Service are all at the scene.

Eyewitnesses told DevonLive an air ambulance had landed at the scene and, at around 10.50am, a Devon Air Ambulance was seen on flight trackers taking off from the airfield.

Emergency services are still there as of 11.45am.
