HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued an important warning to Britons over work expenses claims. In a post on X over the weekend, the UK tax authority urged people to be careful when using firms that charging commissions to sort claims.

It wrote: "Looking to claim work expenses? Dont get caught out by online ads and tax refund firms that charge commission to claim work expenses for you. "Check: Find out what you can and cant claim for. Recognise: Spot the signs of bad tax advice. Claim: Only directly through us."

HMRC deadlines for 2026

Some firms offer to do handle claims on your behalf, asking questions about any spending associated with your work and helping you prepare claims.

However, these services can come with hidden costs, and HMRC says it's better to do it directly through them.

The department warns that if it turns out you are not eligible to claim, "youre still responsible for any claims made on your behalf" meaning you'll be liable if the firm makes a mistake.

Doing it yourself also means you don't face any additional costs. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you may be able to claim tax relief for various types of work expenses, HMRC says.

This includes:

  • Working from home (for up to four tax years before 6 April 2026)
  • Uniforms, work clothing and tools
  • Vehicles you use for work
  • Professional fees and subscriptions
  • Travel, subsistence, and overnight expenses
  • Buying other equipment

You can submit a claim online if the claim is 2,500 or less, but if it's over that, and/or you do a Self-Assessment tax return, it must be submitted via that.

You can find out more on the GOV.UK website.
