Morrisons to introduce new 'toilet rule' across its 497 UK stores

The supermarket giant has introduced the rule after working with a charity

Morrisons has announced a ground-breaking new initiative across hundreds of its UK stores. The supermarket giant has revealed that, following feedback from customers, it has achieved a "major milestone" by rolling out stoma-friendly toilets across all of its branches equipped with accessible bathrooms.

Every one of its 497 full-sized UK stores now features wheelchair-accessible toilets with stoma-friendly facilities. The retailer acknowledges that for those living with a stoma, a routine trip to the supermarket can prove particularly challenging as standard accessible toilets frequently lack the necessary space and equipment.

Morrisons has pledged to promote "independence, dignity, and comfort" for both customers and members of staff, reports the Express.

A statement from the supermarket reads: "For the many people living with a stoma, a simple trip to the shops can often come with hidden anxieties. Standard accessible toilets don't always provide the specific space or tolls needed to manage a stoma with ease. By making these changes we aim to champion independence, dignity, and comfort for our customers and colleagues.

"Working alongside Colostomy UK and Scottish Parliament member Edward Mountain, we've ensured our facilities meet the real-world needs of the stoma community. Not all disabilities are invisible, but they all deserve the same level of care. These upgrades are part of our wider commitment to accessible shopping."

The initiative, which was unveiled earlier this year, involves accessible toilets being equipped with wall hooks to safely hang clothing or bags, shelving for medical supplies, discreet waste disposal bins, and strategically positioned mirrors to assist with quick and straightforward appliance checks.

The 2026 rule won't be the only new change coming to Morrisons stores. The supermarket has also partnered with the NHS to feature cancer awareness messaging on bath and shower products. The range of nine new own-brand products carry messages including "be body aware" and "know the signs of cancer". Morrisons hopes the messages will encourage customers to seek medical advice should they notice anything out of the ordinary.
