Millions on Universal Credit and other benefits will receive a cash boost as they rise in line with inflation.

Last year, the Government pledged that certain benefits would rise in line with the consumer price index (CPI) which works out at 10.1 per cent. The pay rise should help to mitigate the current cost of living crisis for thousands of households.

The benefit increases will take effect from April, although the exact date will be dependent on when you usually receive your benefit payments. A spokesperson for the Department for Work and Pensions confirmed payments will go up from the first Monday of the new tax year, which starts on April 6, 2023.

Inflation soaring to over 10 per cent has led the Government to provide more assistance in 2023, including a 900 cost of living payment for around eight million people on certain benefits. Other support coming in 2023 includes 150 for those with disabilities and 300 for around eight million pensioners.

However, a number of benefits will now rise in line with inflation, giving a cash boost to many.

A number of benefits will go up in line with inflation under the law. These include:

The list of those that are going up by 10.1 per cent (based on a calculation of inflation in September) following the Government's announcement in November includes:

How much extra money you receive will depend on which benefit you're on as they pay out different amounts. Below are a number of examples:

If your circumstances mean that you dont have a Work Allowance, your Universal Credit payment will be reduced by 55p for every 1 you earn. In other words, you will receive an additional 45p for every 1 you earn (up to a limit that depends on your circumstances).

The new amount you will receive after April:

Income support

As income support is a means-tested benefit - which means that your income, savings and any sources of cash are taken into consideration when deciding how much you'll receive. How much you get depends on your personal circumstances. However, if you're single and aged between 16 and 24, your weekly payments start from 61.05. It will go up to 67.22 a week - a 6 a week pay rise, from April 2023.

Housing benefit

The amount you get through Housing Benefit can vary greatly depending on your circumstances - including how much you pay in rent, where you live, and your personal circumstances. But if you were theoretically receiving 100 every four weeks, that will go up to 110.10 a month next year - equating to an increase of just over 10.
