Ex-Hull City boss sends clear transfer message over Tigers bid for Zan Vipotnik

Former Hull City boss Phil Brown believes Swansea City striker Zan Vipotnik is worth pushing the boat out to sign, after his old club's bid was rejected last week.

City submitted a bid thought to be in the region of 10m for Vipotnik last week, but that was turned down by the Swans, who want around 20m.

The Tigers know they must sign extra firepower to bolster Sergej Jakirovic's ranks before the transfer window closes in two weeks, with Oli McBurnie the only recognised senior frontman after Kyle Joseph and Enis Destan's exits.

It's unlikely that City will return to the South Wales club with an improved offer that meets their 20m valuation for a player who netted 23 Championship goals last season.

Brown, though, believes that figure for a player with Vipotnik's finishing ability, and at the age of 24, is good value in the current market, and says he would look to get it done.

"I would pay 20 for him," Brown told the 1904 Club podcast. "From what I witnessed, I've seen him play against Man City (in the FA Cup last season). I'm not saying a steal, but in the modern-day game, you're paying for a goal scorer.

"What does he (Acun Ilicali) want? You need 15 goals, and City stay in the Premier League? That, for me, is a no-brainer, 20m for that. Will he get 15 goals, the kind of style of football that City play, I don't know.

"He (Vipotnik) had a presence on the field of play. His work rate was of a standard, when you're playing against Man City, you're not going to get the ball, so he had to work harder.

"Anyway, long story short, the best part of him is the fact that he's got 23 goals in the Championship? Can he do it in the Premier League? I would have said, give him the opportunity. Twenty million quid is nothing in today's market, nothing at all."
