We tried sausage rolls from every supermarket - and the cheapest was a clear winner

There are few things more satisfyingly picnic-y than sausage rolls.

Sausage rolls are a picnic staple, loved by both children and adults alike. With the variety of flavours available these days, it can be hard to choose.

To make a fair comparison, we decided to test the standard six-pack of sausage rolls from various supermarkets, including the Co-op. At first glance, they all look quite similar once out of their plastic packaging, with Morrisons ' version being slightly shorter and fatter than the rest.

The descriptions are also strikingly similar, all boasting 'lightly seasoned pork', either 'encased' or 'wrapped' in puff pastry. While Aldi and Asda describe their pastry as 'golden', Co-op refers to theirs as 'flaky'. Tesco's is described as both 'golden' and 'flaky', while Morrisons' is simply 'light'.

Sainsbury's and Lidl keep it simple, promising just 'puff pastry'. In reality, most of them taste as similar as they look, but there are subtle differences that set them apart, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Lidl's and Tesco's were described as 'bland' and 'a little dry' by our tasters. Sainsbury's were also a bit bland, but were praised for their texture and the balance between pastry and meat.

On the other hand, some felt that Asda's had too much pastry and not enough meat. The flavour of the meat in both Asda's and Morrisons' was not well received.

In terms of overall texture and flavour, Aldi's Crestwood pack and the Co-op's offerings were the winners, with Aldi's almost spicy pork and Co-op's stuffing-like taste standing out.

When it comes to cost, Aldi offers a 360g six-pack for 1.49, compared to the Co-op's 330g pack for 2.30. However, the Co-op does have a 3-for-2 picnic offer which could save you a significant amount if you're purchasing multiple items.

But based on this, Aldi takes the top spot with its 25p sausage rolls.
