With the school holidays now here for many or soon approaching and the sun making a welcome appearance, beach trips are firmly on the agenda for many families. But one emergency medicine doctor is urging parents to think carefully before they head to the shore - because the biggest threat to their children's safety might be something they carry in their pocket every single day.

Dr Samantha Reeder is a board-certified emergency medicine physician who actively practises medicine and shares educational content online. The A&E doctor, who is also a mum of two toddlers, regularly posts information on 'how to prepare for emergencies' to her 7,000+ followers on her @adventureswithdrmom Instagram account.

In one of her most recent reels, Dr Reeder shared a short clip of two toddlers at the beach enjoying a play in the sand. Overlay text read, 'I'm an ER doctor. Name the most dangerous thing in this video.'

Unveiling the answer in the caption, the doctor wrote: "Everyone guesses the tide. It's the phone I'm filming on.

"I'm an ER doctor, and drowning is silent - no splashing, no screaming, nothing like the movies. It takes about 20 seconds. Long enough to film one video."

Offering her guidance, she added: "At the water, assign a Water Watcher: one adult, no phone, eyes on the kids, swap every 15 min (or a reasonable interval for everyone), That's the whole job. Save this before your next beach day."

The post quickly gained traction, amassing more than 7,000 likes and 2,000 comments.

Many users speculated about other potential dangers, with one person writing: "The young children playing close to the water should have some sort of floaters on. A wave can easily sweep the little one away."

Another chimed in: "I would suggest the sea. I love swimming in the sea, have done for over 60 years, but you must always be aware of its power."

A third offered: "The colour of the little boys clothes in green, it would be hard to see in the water compared to the red clothes."

While a fourth commented: "Children have no sun hats on and maybe no sun tan lotion."

However, some users correctly identified the doctor's point. "The mother taking the video is likely paying more attention to the phone than her kids," wrote one person.

Another agreed: "Your phone. Aka no eyes on kids."

A further commenter thanked both the mum and the doctor for raising awareness, adding: "This! Thank you for sharing."
