Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam frontman and close friend to the late Glen Hansard, was seen last night busking in Dublin city centre.
The iconic rockster was filmed performing on Grafton Street on Thursday in a sweet nod to Hansard, who he had begun his career by busking on the iconic Dublin street at the age of 13.
The surprise performance of Pearl Jam's "Black" was caught on video and posted on Instagram, where commenters expressed delight at this poignant tribute to the Irish Oscar-winning songwriter, who was tragically killed in a road traffic collision in Dublin last week.
"Middle of the night busking just what Glen would have wanted I mean, EXPECTED from his guys," one commenter wrote.
Another commenter highlighted Hansard's humble beginnings as a street busker: "Glen: Grafton St busker to international rockstar. Ed: international rockstar to Grafton St busker Spin the full circle"
"This is such a tribute. Eddie with Glens guitar on the Irish city streets."
Earlier this week, the American vocalist had performed Hansard's song "Song of Good Hope" at his funeral in Dublin's St. Patrick's Cathedral, joined by Hansard's former partner and bandmate Markta Irglov.
The two were close friends, having toured together several times since their fateful meeting in 2010.
Just a month before his tragic motorcycle crash, Hansard had appeared on Track Star, guessing songs and sharing anecdotes on what these songs meant to him. When Vedder's song appeared, he spoke on the significance of his friendship with Vedder.
The Pearl Jam frontman had contacted Hansard after the suicide of a man in one of the latter's concerts, offering him his support. At the time, they were not very close but he and Vedder ended up speaking "for an hour on the phone."
"And he said 'Do you mind if I call you tomorrow?'" Hansard remembered.
"For five days, he called me, every day. At the end of the five days he said 'This is my number, if you're ever in Seattle, I'd love to hang out with you. I'm really sorry for what happened. I feel you'."
