Granada earthquake: Popular holiday spot in Spain hit as tourists flee

Granada in Spain was struck by a reported 5.0 magnitude earthquake

An earthquake has hit the Spanish city of Granada with officials warning to 'watch out for falling debris' and 'stay calm'. The tourist hotspot suffered a reported 5.0 magnitude earthquake just after 1am today (August 15).


DailyStar reports the area Alhendn, saw cars smashed by debris and cracks appearing in the road. At this time there have been no reports of any injuries but people have been rescued from buildings.


The city sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains and is popular for it's architectural beauty. According to the National Geographic Institute, the earthquake occurred at exactly 1.04am with a depth of 2km, followed by another at 10km, with a latitude of 37,1147 degrees and -3.6618 degrees longitude.


The earthquake occurred seven hours after an initial earthquake of magnitude 3.7 with an epicentre in the town of La Zubia. There was around 40 tremors reported in the area during the early hours.

The Andalusian regional government has declared an emergency situation in the area.

Vice-president of the Andalusian regional government Antonio Sanz Cabello issued a warning to residents and told them to "stay calm".


In the post on X, he said: "If you're in Granada, you've felt the earthquake, you're okay, and your home shows no damage, stay calm and avoid entering and exiting buildings unnecessarily.

"On the street, stay away from facades, cornices, balconies, walls, and other elements that could fall."

Mara Jess Montero, General Secretary of the PSOE party in Andalusia, has urged people to take care following the damage caused by the quake.

She said: "Take care following the 5-magnitude earthquake and the numerous tremors that have occurred in Granada, which have also been felt in other provinces.

"Our thoughts are with those affected and please, caution regarding the damage caused to buildings and streets."
