A man has reportedly confessed to killing and dismembering his friend, before scattering his body parts all over a Spanish town.

Francisco Jos Agera went missing during the Covid-19 pandemic, but the case took a turn when workers discovered a bag containing a human head last year.

A suspect told the Spanish Civil Guard that he killed the victim in his home in the town of Con, in the province of Mlaga.

He then dismembered the body before hiding the remains and body parts at various locations in the area.

Detectives pieced together the crime as part of Operation Capibara and the suspect was arrested on July 28. He reportedly led police officers to the exact locations where he had disposed of the body.

Mr Agera's family were convinced he didn't disappear voluntarily, and the case took another turn in June last year when workers from the Alhaurn de la Torre Town Council found a bag inside a manhole.

The workers, who were carrying out cleaning and maintenance work on an undeveloped plot of land, quickly discovered the bag contained a human head with traces of hair and several teeth.

It took a further nine months for forensic analysis to determine the remains belonged to Mr Agera. Civil Guard kept the investigation open to establish the exact circumstances of the violent death and to identify who was responsible.

After identifying the suspect, he led officers to the area where the remains of the body were found, in the vicinity of the Carretera de las Canteras. Investigators also used ground-penetrating radar, drones and sniffer dogs to detect the grisly remains.

Sources from the Civil Guard said that criminal databased, analysing documents and court-authorised technological measures helped them to identify the suspect, who was a friend of the victim.

The man was brought before the court at the end of last week where he exercised his right to remain silent.

He was later ordered to be held in pretrial detention without bail and is accused of homicide.

Mr Agera's neighbours became concerned about his absence and alerted local authorities, who then contacted his sisters.

One of his sibling's attended his property in April 2020 with police officers but found no one inside. His personal belongings remained and there was food in the fridge.

Mr Ageras sister spoke briefly to the channel Canarias 7 to shed the light on the nightmare they have been living for the past six years.

She said: "This is a pain that eats you away, that prevents you from living."

The bereaved sibling also spared a thought for the suspect's family, adding: "The family of the person who did this will also be suffering, and they are not to blame. We have nothing against them."
