Trump says Keir Starmer 'will resign as PM' after 'failing badly' on two issues

Donald Trump has claimed that Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the UK

Donald Trump has claimed Keir Starmer will step down as UK Prime Minister in his latest outburst on social media, insisting the PM had "failed badly" on two key issues.

The US President declared that Starmer had fallen short on immigration and energy, with Trump once again calling on the UK to unlock North Sea oil reserves. Trump rounded off the post by wishing the PM well, reports the Daily Star.

It comes as speculation over Starmer's future has intensified following rival Andy Burnham's victory in the Makerfield by-election earlier this week. However, it has not been officially confirmed that Starmer will stand down.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL! ). I wish him well!".

Burnham is set to make his return to Westminster on Monday (June 22) to be sworn in as the new MP for Makerfield.

It is understood his camp is pressing Starmer to outline his intentions in the coming days, though they would accept a timetable that kept him in No 10 until September.

Starmer is said to be weighing up the "political realities" he now faces, according to a Cabinet minister who declined to rule out the possibility that the Prime Minister could resign.

Business Secretary Peter Kyle told broadcasters on Sunday that he had not spoken to the Prime Minister since Friday, when he had a "frank conversation" with him. When quizzed about reports that Starmer is planning to announce his resignation as early as the coming week, he told Sky News' Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips: "I have nothing to believe that they are true. I'm seeing a lot of speculation out there.

"The only thing I can say with fact is that the Prime Minister is hard at work, as he is every day. He is one of the most hardworking people I've ever come across, and today, as in every other day I've ever known Keir, he is out there working hard.

"At the same time he is also trying to create the space where he can think and reflect on the political realities and challenges, and the opportunities, that lie before us."

Meanwhile, Starmer spent the Sunday at Chequers, where he took to social media to mark Father's Day with a heartfelt message.

He wrote on X: "Being a dad is my greatest joy. Today, I'm thinking about my dad, and the father I am to my children because of him. Happy Father's Day."
