Temperatures could top 40C in parts of Spain over the coming days

As Ireland scorches in the ongoing heatwave, many parts of Europe are also baking in the soaring temperatures as a warning has been issued for those heading on holidays.

With the kids off school, this time of year is one of the most popular for holidaymakers and Spain continues to be a regular favourite for tourists.

But anyone travelling to Spain next week has been warned to expect uncomfortably hot conditions as temperatures could reach more than 40C at times.

Irish weather forecaster Alan O'Reilly, who mans the @CarlowWeather account on X, has shared weather models for the coming days in certain parts of Spain and warned to prepare for absolutely searing conditions.

He posted: "Weather models showing temps over 40C in parts of the South and East of Spain by Thursday.

"If you are heading away on holidays take note and be alert for risk of fires."

Meanwhile, Ireland continues to experience heatwave conditions, with highs of more than 25C for most areas on Saturday and a Status Yellow high temperature warning for 13 counties.

Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford will remain under the weather warning until 7am on Sunday morning.

In affected areas, temperatures could exceed 27C and Met Eireann has warned of water safety issues due to increased use of lakes and beaches, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, heat stress and possible forest fires.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said: "The prolonged spell of very warm or hot weather will continue for much of next week. Nights will become very warm and humid too, with some tropical nights likely in parts. It'll remain dry and sunny for most for much of the week, though with an increased chance of some showers or thunderstorms later in the week."
