A Dublin man made a two-and-a-half hour journey to sample "Galway's most hyped takeaway" and came away declaring it the finest burger in all of Ireland.

The verdict comes from self-styled "Ireland's most honest food reviewer", who paid a visit to Smashbird on Cross Lower Street to determine whether all the buzz surrounding the spot was truly warranted.

The content creator, known on YouTube as Paul_IsItWorthIt, said: "Most food reviewers that you will have seen online have all ranted and raved about it.

"I've got loads of recommendations to come down here as well. The locals seem to love it. But some of the food reviewers that have come down here have been known, or allegedly, take some money to do reviews. So the sheriff's in town today."

Paul noted that the takeaway was "absolutely packed" and could see from the street that the walls inside were adorned with awards.

Smashbird, which also runs a restaurant on Dominick Street, claimed top honours in the Burger and American category at last year's Deliveroo Awards.

Paul went for the Big Bird burger, loaded with buttermilk fried chicken, Hickeys beef patty, streaky bacon, cheese, pink onion and smash sauce.

The burger set him back 14, while chicken wings were on the menu at 12. Taking his first bite, he exclaimed: "Oh wow. That chicken is so moist.

"Oh my God mate. That is amazing, the juiciness of the chicken and then the saltiness of the beef together? Oh my god, that's amazing."

He also heaped praise on the "tangy and glorious" sauce before adding: "The chicken is like smashed down. It's not like a huge piece of chicken. It's the perfect amount of each.

"You said, is it gluttony? It's not. It's a perfect bite. It's not too much. You're getting everything in one.

"That could be the best burger I've had in Ireland. I was really really sceptical because I saw how many food influencers have been down here and said it's great - and sometimes it's probably not."

He went on to note that the chicken wings were on the smaller side, but every bit as tasty.

Paul described it as an "amazing food spot" and said he could fully appreciate why it drew such large crowds.

Struggling to settle on a score out of 10, he insisted: "That's one of the best burgers I've had in Ireland. Genuinely.

"It's amazing. The chicken's cooked so well and the beef is lovely and salty. Not overly seasoned. The sauce is adding something to it. And then the veg is giving a little bit of crunch to it. It's lovely.

"And them wings? Not my usual sort of sauce, but I think they're very good. My only criticism is bit small? You can you can get a large portion for 16."

In the video, which you can watch in full here, he awarded the establishment an outstanding score of 9.5 out of 10.

One viewer commented: "Love this spot, myself and my girlfriend get it like once a month."

A second chimed in: "They're not paying influencers to review the place. They don't need to, food is amazing."
