An Irish town steeped in history has been named the "most picturesque town in Ireland" - emerging victorious in online debates as the finest destination the country has to offer.
And surprisingly, the compact port town in question isn't Kinsale, which is often lauded for being picturesque, but a coastal gem celebrated on social media for its stunning vistas, rich historical heritage, and abundant activities suitable for a day excursion from nearby Cork. Enthusiasts highlight that from heritage centres to scenic trails, alongside numerous spots to enjoy refreshments and beverages, the settlement is ideally located for a swift retreat from everyday life.
The town in question is Cobh, situated on the southern shore of Cork, and it has been making waves on TikTok thanks to Chris, an Irish content creator from Belfast who frequently uploads travel content from throughout Ireland. In a recent clip, he proclaimed Cobh as the "most picturesque town" in Ireland.
Within his footage, Chris recorded himself at the town's edge beside a wall, before raising his phone up and over the barrier to unveil the breathtaking panorama of Cobh, featuring a line of brightly-painted houses and St Colman's Cathedral, illuminated by a gorgeous sunset.
He said: "I'm going to show you the most picturesque town in all of Ireland."
Viewers couldn't help but agree with his assessment, with some even revealing they had predicted he was talking about Cobh before his camera revealed the picture-perfect town.
One individual commented: "I literally said to myself, if he shows anywhere besides Cobh, he's wrong."
Another added: "I spent a whole day there solo. Absolutely magical."
A third wrote: "Oh my gosh. The way my heart dropped when you went over the wall."
Cobh is a coastal port town that houses Ireland's sole dedicated cruise terminal. The town, with roughly 14,000 inhabitants, was called Queenstown from 1849 until 1920, and served as the final stop for the Titanic before she embarked across the Atlantic on the concluding portion of her maiden journey.
For those passionate about history, the town offers numerous attractions and activities. Cobh features the Titanic Trail, which guides visitors through the town's lanes and unveils locations and stories linked to the legendary vessel.
The route additionally provides insight into the harbour's past and Irish culture, while presenting multiple photographic opportunities throughout.
Should history not appeal to you, there's no shortage of alternative pursuits. Cobh boasts its own art trail for exploration, alongside green spaces at the Old Church Cemetery, and a compact yet delightful museum.
But amongst the town's most striking features is the terrace of brightly-coloured houses called The Deck of Cards. This terrace comprises 23 gable-fronted properties that seem to challenge gravity, as each one follows the slope of a sharp incline.
The town's website describes the houses as the "most photographed scene in Cobh", noting their location, watched over by St Colman's Cathedral, provides "some of the most beautiful views Ireland has to offer".
