Jessie Buckley has completed her awards season dominance by winning the Oscar for Best Actress in a motion picture for her role in Hamnet.
The actress, who recently divided fans with a 'grandma pajamas' outfit, won the award during the Sunday, March 15 broadcast, beating out fellow nominees Emma Stone for Bugonia, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs Id Kick You, and Renate Reinsve for Sentimental value.
As she accepted her Academy Award, Buckley, 36, quickly acknowledged special people in the room with her to celebrate her win, cheekily admitting that the country of Ireland paid to bring them to the U.S. for her win. Her comment came after Oscars host Conan O'Brien's curt two-word message to photographers on red carpet
Buckley shared, Wow, um thank you so much. This isthis is really something. Thank you to the incredible women that I stand beside, I am inspired by your art and your heart and I want to work with every single one of you.
She then acknowledged her family, sharing they had all come in from Ireland.
My family, my Irish family, theyre all here! she said. Ireland paid for their flights!
As the audience erupted into laughter, she continued, sharing an emotional tribute to her parents before then bringing out more laughs as she also thanked her husband.
Mom, dad, thank you for teaching us to dream and to never be defined by expectation and to carve from your own passion, she said. You, Fred, I love you man. I love you.
Youre the most incredible dad. Youre my best friend. And I want to have 20,000 more babies with you. I do!
Buckleys win was the only one for the film, though it was a strong contender in several categories, earning eight nominations overall.
It received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director for Chloe Zhao, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Casting, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
Buckley dominated awards season with the honors she picked up for portraying Agnes Shakespeare in the film, which tells the story of William Shakespeare and his wife and how they cope with the death of their young son, Hamnet, which inspires him to write Hamlet.
Prior to the Oscar, she took home the BAFTA, Critics Choice Award, Golden Globe and Actor Awards for the role.
The movie also starred Paul Mescal, Noah Jupe, Joe Alwyn, Jacobi Jupe, Emily Watson, and Olivia Lynes.
Buckleys win is her first, and was her second nomination overall. She had previously been nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2022 for her work in The Lost Daughter.
