Donald Trump allegedly looked "furious" as he spoke about Karoline Leavitt's White House departure and claimed she "likes her children more than she likes Trump". Leavitt, Trump's US Presidents embattled White House press secretary, has emerged as one of his most loyal mouthpieces, regularly facing off against the press and defending the Trump administration.
In August, Trump announced that Leavitt would be stepping down to "spend more time" with her family. In May, she gave birth to a daughter, Viviana, and recently returned from maternity leave.
Since then, there has been growing speculation about her successor. Names being touted include Trump's former lawyer Alina Habba, podcaster Katie Miller, deputy press secretary Anna Kelly, and TV anchor Sage Steele. It comes after Trump's "most beautiful" aide is enjoying a break amid Leavitt's departure.
As for Trumps reaction, one political commentator alleged that he appeared "genuinely resentful" in a recent interview. He also appeared to float another name as a possible replacement with Leavitt standing right there.
David Pakman said on his YouTube channel: "Donald Trump has discovered that outgoing White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is loyal to her own children over Donald Trump. How on earth could this possibly be?
"And even when Trump presents this as sort of a joke, the joke reveals Trump's understanding of loyalty."
Her decision came as his approval rating hit historic lows, with voters railing against the Iran war and soaring prices. Yesterday, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found that it had fallen to 33%, with 64% disapproving.
David played a clip of Trump being interviewed by Fox News correspondent Alexis McAdams about Leavitts departure. He suggested that Trumps true feelings about the exit were written all over his face.
He said: "If you look at Donald Trump's expressions, if you look at Donald Trump's demeanor, you can tell that while this is couched as a joke, Trump doesn't really get it. Trump isn't happy. Trump is furious that Karoline Leavitt is leaving, and he looks genuinely resentful."
Alexis asked the POTUS if Leavitt was "replaceable". He said she "really isn't", then gestured off-camera and noted that Leavitt was standing there.
He said with a smile: "She likes her children more than she likes Trump. I'm very concerned about that." As he spoke, Alexis asked if he had anyone in mind to take over the job.
Addressing Alexis and Leavitt, Trump said: "You. How about you? She could do the job. I think so. What do you think, Karoline? I like it. I've always liked you. That's why I'm doing this.
"I don't do this that often. I get off, I make a speech here, I come off and we see, Alexis. You have done a great job."
David added: "Trump appears genuinely resentful. The idea that someone might have priorities unrelated to Trump is crazy to him."
