CC is an international nonprofit organization that empowers people to grow and sustain the thriving commons of shared knowledge and culture we need to address the worlds most pressing challenges and create a brighter future for all. Together with our global community and multiple partners, we build capacity and infrastructure, we develop practical solutions, and we advocate for better sharing: sharing that is contextual, inclusive, just, equitable, reciprocal, and sustainable.

Alongside UNGA 81 in New York in September, Creative Commons is bringing together leading civil society and digital rights organizations for A Conversation on Collaboration, a day-long symposium examining how to balance digital sovereignty with open collaboration. Lightning talks and panels will explore the questions: Where are open practices complementary, and where is there friction? How does this vary at different levels of the open stack? What can we learn from conceptions of sovereignty at the individual and community level? Programming will be held at the NYU Engelberg Center from 10 am-3 pm with a midday lunch break. We are proud to host this event alongside our co-organizers Public Knowledge, Ushahidi, the Project Liberty Institute, the NYU Law Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy, the Global Solutions Initiative, Invest in Open Infrastructure, and The AI Disclosures Project. How do open licensing frameworks interact with Indigenous data sovereignty? What tools and protocols help institutions work ethically with Indigenous collections? How can institutions move from policy commitments to meaningful practice? Our virtual panel on 1 September will feature the authors of "Guidance for Indigenous Collections and Indigenous Data" as they discuss how cultural institutions can apply practical, community-centered approaches to Indigenous collections while balancing openness with respect for Indigenous protocols, consent, and control. The conversation will include Jane Anderson, Maui Hudson, Hop Hopkins, and Corrie Roe, with opening remarks by Brigitte Vzina and moderated by Dee Harris. Local Contexts https://buff.ly/gUMSgxb
With over 1,200 attendees, this year's Wikimania gave us space to trade ideas, learn from other open advocates, and think through emerging conversations around AI. Throughout the week, sessions and conversations highlighted both the plurality of views and challenges we face in the current ecosystem, as well as the opportunities to unite around shared goals, ensuring that open knowledge can serve as an antidote to commercialization of the commons. Read our newest blog post for our reflections on the sessions CC hosted as well as the takeaways from the many conversations we were a part of during our week in Paris! https://lnkd.in/eTHRSH_Z

You can't audit what you can't trace. And right now, most AI systems can't point to what shaped their answer. A recent study found more than 30% of responses from leading search-enabled LLMs gave no attribution at all. OpenMined's Irina - Madalina Bejan and Jack Hardinges co-authored a new piece with Creative Commons, mapping where attribution methods actually stand: RAG citations, Shapley-value scoring, and training-data influence functions.
