Prince Harry was among a group of high-profile individuals who claimed Associated Newspapers, the publishers of the Daily Mail and Palace Confidential, used illegal newsgathering methods between 2001 and 2013. A number of Palace Confidential royal experts were witnesses in the case, which is why we havent been able to talk about it until now. Last week, all 97 claims were dismissed in an overwhelming victory for the Mail in a case that many said should never have come to trial. On this bonus episode of Palace Confidential, Richard Kay and Charlotte Griffiths share what it was REALLY like testifying in the High Court and reveal the 'fundamental flaw' in Prince Harry's legal action. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting down with Kate Alessi of Google this week. Only 15% of us in the UK are AI super users, deploying it to win promotion and pay rises. Most of that group are young, urban and male. Mid-life women are facing yet another career barrier - but the good news is, we can do something about it. Im working on my AI skills myself. My view is its important to find the time, even though were all busy.

Six months after winning the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hackathon, our idea is now live on the Daily Mail app. The concept was simple: create a community-focused audio product, rooted in published articles and reader comments to drive up community engagement and habitual app usage. Heres the short timeline of how we got here and where its going next Oct 2025: Won the AWS hackathon Nov 2025: Created a vector database of the Daily Mails article archive Jan 2026: Built Airtime Labs, an AI audio platform to power new audio briefings in bespoke formats Feb 2026: Fine-tuned Airtime Labs with our podcast team to ensure the audio features and platform UX were high-spec March 2026: Created our first show, the Daily Download, a morning news briefing that gives our Daily Mail commenters a voice alongside the top stories of the day April 2026: Gathered feedback from editors across the newsroom on the Daily Download, so we could finesse the end product May 2026: Soft-launched the Daily Download in the app, whilst testing different promotional modules June 2026: Started publishing the Daily Download each morning, between 8am11am, in a new homepage module on the app. Each episode is edited by journalists and presented by custom AI voices July 2026: Over 20,000 app users have listened to the Daily Download in its first two weeks (and growing each day!) Where next? - Create a new version for our US audience - Launch additional desk-level audio briefings - Create supporting video for each episode for social channels - Test personalised formats - Partner with commercial sponsors - Scale the platform to other companies interested in producing similar audio products Special mentions to Louis Mclean, Georgios Gkakos, Lewis Buttress, Jamie East, Mike Wooller, Marvyn Wong and Cameron Roy - who have been instrumental in building, finessing and continually editing both Airtime Labs and the Daily Download so far. Last night in Lisbon, The Irish Mail on Sunday Investigations Editor Michael O'Farrell was awarded the European Press Prize for Investigative Reporting widely regarded as the European equivalent of the Pulitzer, for his extraordinary work on The Brother D Conspiracy. This powerful, years-long investigation exposed a decades-long child abuse cover-up and, crucially, helped deliver justice for victims. It stands as a reminder of the very best of what investigative journalism can achieve: holding institutions to account and giving voice to those who need it most. What makes this recognition even more remarkable is that Michaels work stood alongside large, cross-border teams, yet was the only shortlisted project produced by a single reporter. In his own words, the focus remains exactly where it should be: on the victims, and on the trust they placed in him to tell their story. Huge congratulations to Michael and to the entire Irish Mail on Sunday team behind this work.
