New case study: 'Putting Secure by Design into practice' by Andy Richings is available now! With special thanks to Eylem Thron, PhD for your continued support on this project. 'Secure by Design is essential to modern Defence capability. As systems become increasingly digital and connected, security must be embedded from the outset. It is fundamental to building capability that is resilient, operationally effective and trusted throughout its lifecycle. Yet despite widespread acceptance of Secure by Design principles, many Defence programmes still face the same challenge: how do you apply them consistently throughout the engineering lifecycle?' Seeing through the fog of war Were working with Amethyst Research Incorporated and Lancaster University to develop future thermal imaging technology that will be better at seeing through smoke and dust. By rethinking detector design, the team has achieved more than a 10x increase in efficiency while reducing thermal noise. The breakthrough could enable thermal cameras to function more effectively in challenging environments while operating at higher temperatures, reducing the need for bulky cooling systems and opening up new possibilities for deployment on drones, small platforms and by individual soldiers. When support was required to test future mine-hunting capability, our experts mobilised in just two weeks to help design and deliver a high-profile naval table-top exercise. The team worked in collaboration with Naval Design Partnering (NDP), colleagues in the Ministry of Defences National Armaments Director Group, Royal Navy stakeholders and industry to create realistic mine countermeasure scenarios, generating evidence that informed key design changes and helped de-risk a major future investment. Mine hunting ensures freedom of manoeuvre for military and commercial vessels. As mines grow more sophisticated, autonomous systems and advanced modelling are vital to stay ahead. Through innovative approaches, including large-scale 3D printed modelling, the team helped stakeholders identify challenges early, reduce uncertainty and make better-informed decisions. Crucially, findings identified a key design change required for the adoption and optimisation of an offshore support vessel (OSV) design from Norway before committing to costly design decisions helping ensure the UKs future mine hunting mother ship delivers an enhanced UK mine-hunting capability. #FactFriday Did you know? The UK Carrier Strike Group's (UKCSG) Operation HIGHMAST deployment was supported by more than just ships, aircraft and personnel. Scientific analysis played a crucial role throughout the mission. Working alongside the Royal Navy's Operational Advantage Centre (OAC), our experts supported the planning stages, highlights included wargaming and analysis support to assist in understanding levels of risk associated with potentially contested parts of the transit, informing senior decision makers in Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) and CSG and help shape tactics to maximise operational effectiveness. During the deployment itself, our colleagues alongside the OAC provided continuous deployed analytical support to the Carrier Strike Group Battlestaff. Embedded onboard the carrier HMS Prince of Wales, they provided evidence-based analysis to inform decision making and help optimise operational effectiveness, supported by reachback into a wider team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the OAC and Dstl. A major focus of this work was evidencing and validating the Full Operating Capability for UK Carrier Strike, but it also included advice on everything from optimising munitions resupply to the impact of extreme weather on flight operations. The result? Better-informed decisions, enhanced operational effectiveness, and support for a deployment that contributed to developing 17 billion in global trade and prosperity opportunities for the UK. Commander of UKCSG, praised our expert's contribution: The rigorous data collection and analytical approach provided UK Defence with a comprehensive and objective understanding of the Carrier Strike capability. This work has set a benchmark for best practice, ensuring that decision-makers are equipped with accurate insights to identify strengths and prioritise areas for future improvement. By embedding directly within the CSG Headquarters, the analysts enhanced operational efficiency and informed key decisions, significantly contributing to Warfighting Readiness for both the United Kingdom and NATO. Their efforts demonstrate the unequivocal value of science and technology in enabling operational effectiveness and delivering strategic advantage at the highest level. Operation HIGHMAST is an example of moving towards warfighting readiness as set out by the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), ensuring that Defence is ready to meet the threats of today and tomorrow. OFEME is taking a break in 2026 For the past six years, the Operating in the Future Electromagnetic Environment (OFEME) Symposium, delivered through our Electromagnetic Activities Programme, has been the main platform for engagement across the UK's Defence Science and Technology Enterprise. OFEME has provided a forum to share our vision, strategy and plans for the Electromagnetic Environment (EME), while helping to build and strengthen a thriving community of researchers, industry partners, government and academia. After six highly successful years, OFEME will be taking a well-earned rest in 2026, well be looking ahead to a refreshed and rebooted OFEME 2027. The good news is that there will still be opportunities to connect, collaborate and share research through a series of smaller engagement events. We're pleased to highlight EMERGE 2026 (Electromagnetic Environment Research for Generation-after-next Electromagnetic Activities), a free-to-attend, academic-led event hosted by the EME Hub at Loughborough University on 34 November 2026. Developing drone technology for future warfare. As modern battlefields evolve, so do the threats facing armed forces. Uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), or drones, have become an increasingly significant challenge, as seen in Ukraine. To help address this threat, our scientists are working with the British Army, industry partners and international allies to test new drone technologies and develop AI-enabled capabilities for the battlefield. Together, these initiatives are supporting operational effectiveness and helping ensure the UK remains prepared for emerging threats. Great to see the further evolution of autonomous collaborative platforms
Control of the air can no longer be taken for granted. As technology evolves and threats become more complex, the RAF is investing in the next generation of air power. StormFighter, the RAF's future Collaborative Combat Aircraft programme, will bring together drones and piloted aircraft to create a force that is agile, integrated and ready to fly, fight and win.
Understanding how aircraft and weapons are detected, and how survivability can be maximised is critical to modern air operations. Over the last 18 months, our experts have worked with UK Ministry of Defence colleagues and international partners to transform how Radio Frequency (RF) signature data is accessed and used. By introducing a standardised data format and new digital tools, operators can now assess detection ranges, survivability and operational risk more quickly and confidently. This work has made it easier for operators and planners to understand detection ranges and survivability, and to quantify operational risk. The result is faster, more confident decision making and improved alignment between scientific analysis and operational need. The new data standard has been endorsed by all major UK stakeholders and is aligned with international allies signature standards. This ensures consistency across allied signature products and enables use of data across coalition operations. This cooperative approach not only strengthens UK outputs but reinforces the UKs position as a leader within trusted international defence partnerships. Typhoon has acted as the lead platform for this work, demonstrating the practical benefit of the new approach. Its success has driven demand to extend the capability across other UK and allied aircraft and is influencing data provision in other areas, including weapons and space.
