Ever panic when someone suddenly talks to you in English? Or freeze the moment youre asked to speak in a meeting? You dont need more ready-made phrases, vocabulary lists, or grammar drills. Because language is unpredictable. And the real skill isnt memorizing its learning to respond to the unpredictable. Research backs this up. Cognitive scientists like Rod Ellis (2005) and Norman Segalowitz (2010) have shown that fluency isnt just about recall speed; its about automaticity: your brains ability to retrieve and adapt language under real-world pressure. The more you train your brain to handle unpredictability, the calmer and clearer you become when speaking. Heres how to do it: 1. Train for spontaneity, not perfection. Instead of rehearsing the same dialogues, practice responding to random prompts or unexpected questions. This builds what linguists call procedural fluency: the ability to access and use language automatically in context (DeKeyser, 2007). 2. Reflect right after speaking. Ask yourself: What worked? What could I say differently next time? This activates your metacognitive loop, helping your brain consolidate flexible language patterns rather than fixed scripts (Wenden, 1998; Vandergrift & Goh, 2012). 3. Simulate pressure in small doses. Record yourself explaining something with a 30-second timer. Research on language anxiety and emotion regulation (MacIntyre & Gardner, 1991; Gkonou, Daubney, & Dewaele, 2017) shows that while anxiety can hinder performance, gradual, supportive exposure to real communicative pressure helps learners develop emotional regulation and greater speaking confidence under real-world conditions. Speaking lessons built around escape rooms and imaginative role play are some of the most effective ways I develop oracy in both native and ESL learners. These tasks require sustained talk, collaboration, and thinking aloud, which is why my students are deeply engaged and regularly ask when the next lesson will be. A simple example is asking them to take on the role of an inanimate object, such as the ocean, a pencil case, or a chair, and speak one sentence about what it feels like to be that object. I then extend this through teacher-led questioning, asking prompts such as: Tell me about your typical day, What is your biggest worry for the future? or What do humans do that affects you most?* Students must remain in role, selecting language carefully and responding thoughtfully. Then reverse. Students step into the role of humans, and I continue questioning with prompts like: What else could you do to solve this issue?, Is a compromise possible? or What responsibility do humans have here? This role reversal deepens perspective-taking and requires students to evaluate ideas from more than one viewpoint. Through such activities is how students use talk to think. As they speak, they plan what they want to say, monitor whether their message makes sense to others, and adapt their language in response to new ideas. In problem-solving tasks, they draw on what they already know, identify gaps in understanding, test ideas aloud, and revise their thinking as the task unfolds. Spoken language becomes a working space for thought rather than a finished performance. Critical thinking is embedded as students analyse causes and consequences, justify opinions, challenge assumptions, and explain reasoning. Questioning sits at the centre of this process, yet not all learners arrive with the ability to ask productive questions. Some require explicit modelling and scaffolding, while others benefit from being pushed to refine and extend their thinking. During these lessons, I do not interrupt, avoid correcting language in the moment and instead focus on listening for reasoning, vocabulary choice, and interactional strategies. This allows students to take risks, think aloud, and use language as a tool for problem solving. Feedback is then planned and delivered intentionally, based on observed needs. Careful planning for individual students remains essential. Some learners excel at empathy and perspective-taking in role play, while others are stronger at logical reasoning or leadership. Differentiated questioning and targeted prompts ensure that each student is supported and appropriately challenged, allowing different strengths to contribute meaningfully to the task. THE ARCHITECTURE OF BILITERACY Exploring how the brain builds literacy across languages. LANGUAGE TRANSFER IS HOW LEARNING TRAVELS ACROSS LANGUAGES. Knowledge developed in one language does not disappear when another language is used. When bilingual and multilingual learners encounter a new word, text, or concept, they do not begin from zero in each language. They bring what they already know. Concepts. Experiences. Vocabulary. Sound patterns. Grammatical knowledge. Reading strategies. Ways of organizing and expressing ideas. Some of that knowledge is language-specific. Much of it can support learning across languages. A child who understands the concept of evaporation in Spanish does not need to reconstruct the scientific idea when learning the English wordevaporation. The linguistic label changes. The conceptual knowledge remains available. A student who has learned to identify a main idea, make an inference, organize an argument, or monitor comprehension in one language can draw upon those same cognitive processes when working in another. This is language transfer. Transfer does not mean that every feature moves directly or accurately between languages. Languages have different sound systems, spelling patterns, vocabulary, grammar, and conventions. Some similarities facilitate learning. Some differences require explicit attention. The instructional task is not to prevent languages from interacting. They already do. The task is to help students recognize which knowledge can transfer, where the languages connect, and where a different linguistic pattern must be learned. When these relationships remain invisible, students may treat each language as an entirely separate academic world. When instruction makes them visible, prior learning becomes a resource. Phonological awareness can support the analysis of new sound patterns. Conceptual knowledge can support comprehension. Cognates and morphology can expand vocabulary. Literacy strategies can be applied across texts. Contrasts between languages can strengthen metalinguistic awareness. Language transfer is not a shortcut, and it does not replace explicit instruction in either language. It is the process through which existing knowledge participates in new learning. We Teach the Pause "Just a moment let me think." This simple pause cue interrupts impulsivity and invites the brain to engage. It's the gateway to inner listening not rushing to answer, but hearing your own thoughts take shape. 2. We Activate Verbal Self-Regulation What am I doing right now? What am I looking for? What makes this sentence important? These self-questions turn passive readers into active processors. We call that metacognitionthinking about thinking. 3. We Connect Thinking to Strategy Instead of circle the main idea, we teach: Say what you think the author wants you to understandthen ask: Does everything else support that? Now they're not just performing a task theyre checking it against their own understanding. 4. We Make Thinking AudibleThen Internal At first, we say it out loud: Im noticing something here Waitthat doesnt make sense. Oh, now I see why they did that. Later, we guide students to say it in their heads until it becomes their thinking voice. 5. We Let Silence Be Strategy Quiet in the room doesnt mean nothing is happening. If we teach students to: Reflect Rehearse Reconsider then silence becomes a sign that the mind is working. Why This Matters for Marginalized Learners: Many students from under-resourced backgrounds: Have rarely been asked what they think Are rewarded for compliance, not reflection May not have internalized the right language for processing Youre not just teaching them how to read.
