As a Tourism Professor with extensive travel experiencehaving spent 134 days abroad this year aloneI've observed that airports still have significant potential for improvement in delivering a seamless and enriching experience not just for travelers but the people who see them off, the people who receive them; and those who work in airports. People travel for leisure, relaxation, and well-being, yet airports are often the anti-thesis of these experiences. They are typically formal, cold, stressful, and costly environments. Drawing on my expertise, I'd like propose the following enhancements that could transform airports into truly modern hubs of convenience and comfort: 1. Enhanced Workstations and Charging Points: Despite the advancements in travel technology, many airports in 2024 still lack sufficient workstations and charging points for mobile devices. Ensuring that travelers can stay connected and productive is essential for a modern travel experience. 2. Streamlined Security and Check-In with Biometrics: The use of biometric identification can significantly reduce wait times at security and check-in, offering a more efficient and stress-free process for passengers. 3. In-Gate Food and Purchase Delivery: Viewing airports as mini-cities opens up innovative possibilities, such as integrating food delivery apps to allow passengers to have meals and other purchases delivered directly to their departure gate. This would not only enhance convenience but also support local F&B outlets. 4. Utilization of Outdoor Spaces: Airports can transform outdoor or rooftop areas into nature immersion zones, offering amenities like yoga sessions, outdoor cinemas, and picnic spaces to detract from the stress of terminal life. 5. Sleep Pods and Quiet Spaces: The provision of sleep pods and quiet areas would offer much-needed respite for passengers during long layovers or delays. 6. Work-Friendly F&B Outlets: By integrating workspaces and charging ports within food and beverage outlets, airports can cater to business travelers who require functional spaces to stay productive while on the move. 7. On-Site Fitness and Wellness Facilities: With the increasing emphasis on fitness and well-being, airports should consider offering gyms and fitness spaces, allowing passengers to maintain their wellness routines even while traveling. 8. Dedicated Meditation Rooms: Incorporating meditation rooms would provide travelers with a peaceful retreat, promoting mental well-being and stress relief during their journey. These suggestions expand airport markets to serve not only travelers but also the workers and the loved ones who see them off and welcome them upon arrival. They also only align with current travel trends and position airports as pioneers in enhancing the overall experience. Numbers like these dont happen by coincidence. They are the product of a 20-year national strategy that turned geography logistics diplomacy economic power. The Architecture of Acceleration 1. Generates AED 30 + billion in tourism spending annually. Drives AED 270 + billion in re-export trade value. Every +1 million passengers = AED 4.5 billion added to output (estimate). Connectivity isnt convenience its competitiveness in motion. Completion is expected by late 2026. This initiative positions Surat as a lighthouse city - offering a replicable model for other Indian and global cities seeking resilient, low-impact, and people-centred coastal development. The Numbers That Matter: 35.9 million tonnes of CO equivalent, cumulative carbon reduction targeted by the project. 12.2 million urban residents -lives expected to improve across SCIP programme cities, including 5.8 million women. Nearly 2,000 hectares of land to be restored locally. One million hectares globally under the programme. 250 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions targeted for reduction across all 50 programme cities. Employment & Economic Opportunity Climate resilience is not a cost, it is an investment. The Dumas project is generating employment in construction, coastal engineering, green infrastructure, urban tourism and environmental management. Airport terminal projects dont go over budget because of bad architects they go over budget because the requirements programme was never aligned with strategy in the first place. In almost every terminal planning project Ive been involved in, there is this moment halfway through concept design when the management suddenly realises the project does not fit the budget. But the architect says: , . By that time, the project has often already been running for 1-2 years, especially after starting with a design competition. Several person-years of work are already invested. And onlydoes the organisation really start to question its own requirements. How did we get here? In many airports, the space programme is created before planners come on board. A typical logic is: forecast peak-hour demand for a process (check-in, security, etc.) assume a throughput per unit (e.g. passengers per security lane and hour) multiply by a standard area per unit Often, the IATA ADRM is used as an argument: These areas are predefined anyway. In practice, that is rarely true. In 20 years, I have never seen two identical calculations based on that document. What Isee again and again: 1. requirements based mostly on the past, not on the airport you want to be in 1020 years 2. well-meant hidden reserves that are not transparently discussed 3. limited understanding of actual process times and possibilities for improvement There is a better way! Projects that work smoother start with a strategic discussionthe space programme: What should fundamentally work differently in the new terminal? Which processes must run more efficiently? What concrete targets do we set (e.g. capacity per security lane)? From this, you can derive clear strategic guidelines. And instead of fixing every number upfront, some topics are turned into design questions for the competition or early concept design (for example: How much space would we get for gate holdrooms under different design concepts?). Client and planners then explore options together and decide based on real layouts and data, not just abstract assumptions. The result: leaner, more effective terminals - and far fewer painful, expensive redesigns halfway through the project. There was enough power, but there wasnt enough resilience. Last weeks Heathrow shutdown wasnt just a power outageit was an exposure. A transformer fire at the North Hyde substation took out electricity to the worlds second-busiest airport. The ripple effects were felt across global aviation, supply chains, and headlines. John Pettigrew, CEO of National Grid, says the other two substations serving Heathrow hadenough capacity to keep the airport running. So why the closure? Because operational resilience isnt just about capacityits about design, systems, decision-making, and time. Heathrows CEO explained that they had to shut down thousands of systems and methodically reboot them to ensure safety. Backup generators existedbut only to cover critical safety systems, not full operations. Switching to alternate substations wasnt instantaneous; reconfiguring and restoring took hours. This is a classic example ofdesign resilience vs. lived resilience. We often assume that having backupavailableis enough. But in complex systemsairports, hospitals, data centersitshow quickly and safelythat backup can be activated that defines true resilience. Other major airports have made resilience a priority: - JFK, New York 110 MW gas-fired CHP plant enabling full microgrid operation during outages. - Frankfurt Airport Redundant grid feeds, on-site gas turbine generation, and UPS systems. - Amsterdam Schiphol Integrated energy management system with diesel and battery backup for essential systems. - Changi Airport, Singapore Multiple grid connections, standby diesel generation, and automated switchgear. - Incheon International, South Korea Dual-feed substations, backup diesel generators, and smart grid control. These airports understand thatresilience isnt a luxuryits a license to operate. This is the future of energy for critical infrastructure: - Decentralized - Redundant - Fast-switching - Integrated with grid and on-site systems. If Heathrowdespite being served by three substationscould still go dark for nearly 24 hours, the question isntwho to blame. Itswhat to build differently. $100 billion over 100 years: Singapore faces an existential challenge for 2100. Why? Its expected by that time, sea levels could rise by up to 1.15m. Combined with storm surges and high tides, floods of 4-5m could devastate much of low-lying Singapore. The reality? About 30% of Singapore sits less than 5m above mean sea level. But Singapore has always planned for the long term. They're not waiting for 2100. What they're doing now: - $10 billion Coastal and Flood Protection Fund established in 2020 - Reclaiming 800 hectares offshore for the East Coast (twice the size of Marina Bay) - Studying large barriers for the south-western coastline - Dividing the coastline into eight sections for targeted protection The scale is massive: Long Island alone will protect much of the city-east coast stretch. Studies are underway for Jurong Island, Sentosa, and the north-west coast. This is where Dutch and Belgian expertise becomes crucial: - World-leading land reclamation experience - Coastal nourishment techniques - Working with nature solutions - Adaptive seawalls and hybrid engineering Countries like the Netherlands have been fighting sea level rise for centuries. Singapore needs that expertise now. For marine infrastructure professionals, this represents both challenge and opportunity. Your work will literally shape Singapore's survival for generations. The construction of coastal defenses starts in the 2030s. A coastal protection law comes by 2026. The timeline is real, the investment is committed, the expertise is needed. How Cars Talking to Each Other Could Save 90,000 Lives a Year by 2030 On January 8, 2026, Nitin Gadkari announced something far more radical: Mandatory Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication in all new vehicles. If executed well, this could become Indias single most powerful road safety intervention ever. Why This Matters: Indias Road Crisis in One Snapshot India has a public health emergency. 5 lakh accidents every year. 1.8 lakh deaths annually, one death every 3 minutes. 66% victims aged 1834, the demographic dividend. 3+ lakh crore annual economic loss (3% of GDP). The governments target is clear: 1. Cut fatalities by 50% by 2030. 2. Thats 90,000 lives saved every year. 3. 500 lives every single day. What Was Announced 1. This isnt a pilot. Its a mandate. 30 MHz spectrum (5.8755.905 GHz) earmarked exclusively for V2V. Spectrum provided free, no auction, no delay. Joint task force between the Road Transport Ministry & DoT. Notification by end of 2026. 2. Every vehicle broadcasts basic safety data 10 times/sec: Location, speed, direction, braking status & vehicle type. Cars around you hear this and warn you before you can see danger. 3. Traditional road safety depends on perfect roads, perfect enforcement, and perfect human behaviour. India has none of the three. V2V works despite chaos. Thats the breakthrough. The Economics: Why This Pays for Itself Per-vehicle cost: 5,50016,000 (14% price impact on most cars) Industry-wide investment (20272030): 20,00060,000 crore annually What India gets in return: - 1.5 lakh crore annual savings from accident reduction - 1020% lower insurance premiums for owners - 2.5 lakh fewer trauma hospitalisations - 4.59 lakh crore productivity preserved by saving young lives - ROI: 12 years at the national scale. Who Wins, Who Struggles Winners - Large OEMs: Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra. - Auto electronics suppliers: Bosch, Continental, Denso. - Fleet operators (trucks, buses, ride-hailing). The Two-Wheeler Problem India Cant Ignore 1. 24 cr two-wheelers 2. 3540% of all road deaths 3. 15,000 tech on an 80,000 bike = 19% price jump 4. Cars & commercial vehicles first, premium two-wheelers next, subsidised rollout for delivery & fleet bikes, and full penetration only by the mid-2030s. Without solving two-wheelers, a 50% reduction stays out of reach. 5. V2V alone: 2030% reduction; V2V + enforcement + safer roads + behaviour change: 4050% is achievable. This isnt magic. Its systems engineering. Instead of fixing human behaviour first, its engineering around human failure. If India executes this right, it wont just reduce accidents. Sometimes I hit sustainability fatigue. So much news about missed ESG targets, climate setbacks, and rising emissionsit can feel overwhelming. Then I came across a The Straits Times article about Singapores efforts to protect its coasts, and it was genuinely refreshing. Concrete plans, measurable actions, and long-term vision. Heres the story in three parts: 1. : By 2100, sea levels could rise 0.231.15m, with storm surges potentially adding another 45m. Around 30% of Singapores land is less than 5m above sea level, putting homes, schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure at risk. Reclaimed land, including East Coast, Marina Bay, Jurong, and Sentosa, is particularly vulnerable, affecting thousands of residents and economic activity. 2. : , , - Singapore has earmarked over S$125 million for Coastal Protection and Flood Management research, with additional long-term funding through the Coastal and Flood Protection Fund projected to exceed S$100 billion over the next century. : Long Island at East Coast (~800ha, equivalent to 1,000 football fields) as a coastal barrier, freshwater reservoir, and recreational area. Detailed studies for Sentosa and the south-western coast starting by 2026, alongside ongoing studies for North-West, Jurong, and City-East areas. PUB has established a dedicated Coastal Protection Department, coordinating research, construction, and policy implementation. 3. : -, Hybrid green-grey approaches integrate hard infrastructure with natural buffers: mangroves, reefs, and seagrass meadows reduce wave energy, enhance biodiversity, and support marine ecosystems. Digital coastal twins are being developed to simulate storm surges, sea-level rise, and extreme rainfall, helping planners design adaptive solutions. These efforts create safe, accessible, and green public spaces, turning resilience projects into opportunities for recreation, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. Singapore has always thrived by planning ahead. Coastal protection isnt just about preventing disastersits about shaping a sustainable, resilient island for future generations. Helsinki just marked a full year without a single traffic fatality. https://lnkd.in/ec--U4Ar I once cycled through Finland (interspersed with train travel to make it round some of their 187,000 lakes!) From this I became slightly obsessed with travel pattens and transport options across the country. So, coming across this latest headline was great to see, but it wasnt a surprise as such, its been years in the making. And heres why: Its not just about safer crossings or speed limits in isolation. Helsinkis transport authority uses tools like mobile sensing (e.g. TravelSense) more recently real-time bike-share data, and detailed travel-time matrices to understand the spatial and temporal rhythms of the city. They know which streets see early-morning cycle spikes. They can track when pedestrian volumes rise near rail hubs. They model access to schools, services, and jobs by time of day and by mode Datadriven infrastructure and policy in Helsinki isnt blind, it's tuned to when and where people move, across different user types and modes. This long term data gathering and understanding is a key driver behind the citys safety and modalshift successes. This insight supports practical decisions30km/h limits around schools and residential zones, widened footways and separated bike lanes in highfootfall areas, and targeted improvements in under-served parts of the city. All this feeds into how people behave and how we use this to shift behaviour. As the article points out, the credit for zero deaths belongs not just to infrastructure, but to everyone using the road. When public space invites care, predictability and mutual respect, behaviour changes too. Better safety isnt just about enforcement or campaigns. Its about designing systems that anticipate movement patterns, support good decisions, and allow human error without tragic consequences. In other words: this is a Safe System approach in practice.
