My work is very busy at present. I have a demanding schedule of coaching appointments, workshops, webinars, and learning design deliveries, as well as administrative tasks. So I took yesterday off to ski. Stepping away regularly from work isn't just enjoyable; its essential. Taking regular 5-minute breaks throughout your workday might seem counterintuitive if you're trying to maximize productivity, but research shows these "micro-breaks" can have a lot of benefits, including: - Enhanced mood and reduced stress. - Improved concentration and productivity. - Better mental recovery from demanding efforts. - Higher levels of energy, motivation, and work engagement. - Reduced risk of health issues related to sedentary or repetitive behavior. The key to getting these benefits is to take these breaks proactively - before you feel mentally or physically drained. A brief walk, some simple stretches, light movements or exercise, or even just looking out the window at nature are examples of breaks that studies have found to be helpful. And this is particularly effective in the afternoon when your energy naturally dips and you need to replenish your mental resources. By incorporating these 5-minute refreshers into your routine at work, you're not just giving your brain a chance to recharge you're making an investment in both your immediate productivity and long-term well-being.

On the sixth day of #A11yMas my true love gave to me a timed agenda with planned break times. If we skip this break we can finish 30-minutes earlier than planned or Does anyone mind if I do this agenda in a different order?. Hands up if youve said one of the above. I know I have! Agendas exist for a reason. They tell people what they need to prepare in advance, and they also give an idea of what will be discussed at the meeting. Many people will prepare in advance, and some may even plan what theyre going to say based on the order of the meeting. If you change that at the last minute, it can be disorienting for many different types of people. Similarly, break times are important. You should aim to plan at least a 10-minute break for every hour of meeting you have, and you should also plan at least a 45-minute lunch break (preferably an hour) if its an all-day meeting. Importantly, though, you need to stick to these break times. Some disabled people will plan their personal care support schedule around meeting break times, some might plan down time for their brains to rest and give the best they can to a discussion, some might need to take breaks to support their adjustments (e.g taking a guide dog out) or some might need to get out of the meeting room (virtual or physical) for other reasons. It shouldnt be incumbent on them to declare their needs publicly in order to secure time thats already in the agenda. Disabled people shouldnt suffer because of poor meeting mismanagement. If you need to recover time or finish earlier, cut your content accordingly and not your break times. I know youre busy! So each of these things can be done in less than THREE minutes- pick one and notice the difference. 1. Deep Breathing: Take a deep breath in through your nose for a count of four. Hold for four counts. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of four. Repeat this cycle three times to calm your mind and body. 2. Quick Stretch: Stand up and stretch your arms above your head. Stretch to the sides and twist your torso gently from left to right. Roll your shoulders backward and forward. This helps release tension and improves blood flow. 3. Mindful Minute: Close your eyes and take a moment to focus on your breath. Notice the sensation of the air entering and leaving your nostrils. If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your breath. Doing this for one minute can bring a sense of calm, clarity and presence. 4. Gratitude Break: Take a moment to think of three things youre grateful for. They can be as simple as a good cup of coffee, a supportive colleague, or a sunny day. Focusing on gratitude can shift your mindset and reduce stress. 5. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Tense the muscles in your toes for five seconds, then release. Move up to your calves, thighs, abdomen, chest, arms, and face, tensing each muscle group for five seconds and then releasing. This can help release physical tension and promote relaxation. Without it, you problem-solve in bed. And wake up already depleted. The lie smart people tell themselves: "I don't have time to recover."
