The Met Office has shared its verdict on the possibility of another heatwave in the UK. Temperatures have cooled down drastically following weeks of scorching conditions. Wet weather has swept across the North West after a dry spell, with rainy conditions set to continue this week.

Temperatures peaked at 38.1C in London on Thursday (August 13), making it the fifth hottest day on record for the UK. People across the country flocked to nearby seaside towns and beaches to make the most of the sunshine.

It wasn't the first time the UK enjoyed some glorious sunshine, as we've experienced heatwave conditions on five separate occasions since May. However, it's been a gloomy start to the week and we will see "showers replaced by longer spells of rain".

The Met Office said the wet weather will continue throughout this week, but will hot weather return before September?

Will there be another heatwave?

As we make our way towards the end of August, many people will be wondering if another hot spell is on the cards. In its long-range forecast, the Met Office shared there is a "chance" late season heatwaves could develop in the south before autumn arrives.

Looking ahead, the forecaster said: "As we move into the start of meteorological autumn, signals for the prevailing weather patterns affecting the UK are weak, thus something close to the climatological norm is most likely.

"This means a broad northwest-southeast split in conditions, with the high pressure becoming centred close to the south of the UK and more changeable conditions developing towards the north and northwest.

"Meanwhile, drier, more settled weather is slightly more likely towards the south and east. Temperatures are likely to be above average overall. There is a chance that late season hot spells or heatwaves develop, especially in the south."

Liverpool weather forecast

In its outlook for this week, the Met Office said: "Sunny spells and showers expected throughout this period. Some of the showers will be heavy and times, with the risk of hail and thunder. A fresh feel for all."

Wet weather will continue into the week, with showers expected across the North West as well as "fresher" conditions. Temperatures will remain rather mild in comparison to the scorching weather we've experienced in recent weeks.
