The scorching summer temperatures don't just affect you they can have a serious impact on your four-legged friends too, and without recognising certain crucial warning signs, you could inadvertently be placing them in greater danger.
While it might appear delightful to soak up the rays with your pooch, it could actually be the worst possible thing for them. According to the RSPCA, exercise is the most common trigger of heatstroke in dogs, prompting the charity to recommend that owners modify their daily routines to suit the conditions.
The organisation also stresses there isn't a universally "safe" temperature, as it depends on your dog's breed, age, health status and typical activity levels. Therefore, while you're doing your utmost to monitor your dog's activity during hot spells, there are vital indicators to watch for that suggest heatstroke.
Michael Sheils, Brand Ambassador at UK dog grooming supplier Christie's Direct, explains: "If you notice any of these, it's time to get your dog out of the sun and start cooling them down immediately."
One particularly subtle warning sign involves checking your dog's gums for any colour changes. He advises: "Gently lift their lip. A healthy dog's gums should be a nice, healthy pink. If they look bright red, dark red, blue, grey, or unusually pale, something is wrong."
Another warning sign the specialist urges dog owners to watch for is perhaps one of the most recognisable symptoms heavy, frantic panting.
He notes that if the panting is rapid, excessively loud, or fails to ease off even when the dog is resting in the shade, this should raise serious concern.
In a similar fashion, keep a close eye on your dog's movements if they appear restless and are pacing about, this could indicate heatstroke. Anxious behaviours such as wandering aimlessly and seeking out a place to hide are typically telltale signs of the condition.
Finally, another crucial indicator to watch for is any noticeable change in the texture of their saliva. Saliva that looks thick, sticky, or stringy is a strong warning sign that your dog may be suffering from heatstroke without showing more obvious distress.
That said, there are further advanced symptoms which tend to be far more serious and could signal a critical condition.
Neurological problems are amongst them, according to Sheils, who describes this as them "walking like they're dizzy, stumbling, or appearing clumsy and uncoordinated."
Severe lethargy is another symptom to remain vigilant about, alongside collapsing and seizures at which point urgent action becomes absolutely necessary.
Additionally, keep a watchful eye on their stools; any gastrointestinal upset or sudden vomiting could suggest your dog has been severely affected by heatstroke that has taken hold.
Michael went on to advise: "If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, cool them down immediately. Move them to a shaded, cool area and use a fan if you have one. Douse them with cool, never freezing or ice-cold, water, focusing on their underbelly and paws.
"Let them drink small amounts of cool water if they're conscious. Don't wait to see if they get better; call your nearest vet or emergency clinic straight away."
