20 old money baby names for boys and girls that are taking over the UK

These once old fashioned names are coming back in style

Welcoming a new baby is an exciting time - and selecting the ideal name for your little one is amongst the most enjoyable parts. For parents seeking a sophisticated-sounding name, the 'quiet luxury' movement is influencing not just fashion and lifestyle but baby names as well.

The 'quiet luxury' approach favours understated elegance while maintaining premium standards. In fashion, this translates to quality fabrics rather than flashy branding.

Tied in with this movement is the 'old money' aesthetic, which influences everything from hairstyles to furniture choices.

The saying 'money talks, wealth whispers' captures the essence perfectly.

Responding to this movement, baby and nursery retailer Kiddies Kingdom has examined the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Baby Names in England and Wales 2025 dataset, identifying boys' and girls' names within the top 100 that carry recognised aristocratic connections typically associated with the 'old money' aesthetic.

These names were then compared against their ONS rankings from 2015 to identify which had experienced the most significant rise in popularity over the last decade.

The top 10 fastest-climbing girls' names are:

1. Ottilie

2. Margot

3. Mabel

4. Ophelia

5. Ada

6. Olive

7. Elodie

8. Rosa

9. Arabella

10. Iris

Ottilie, meaning "wealth, "prosperity," or "prosperous in battle", has seen the most dramatic rise in popularity since 2015, climbing 357 positions to reach 55th place in 2025.

Of French and German origin, it has soared in popularity since 2015. Part of its appeal can be credited to the variety of adorable shortened versions available for baby Ottilies - Lottie, Tillie and Otto are all popular choices.

Coming in at number two is Margot - pronounced 'Mar-go'. This classic French name, meaning Pearl, is derived from the shortened form of Marguerite.

Alternative spellings include Margo, or even Margaux - a version frequently linked to the renowned French wine region.

The top 10 fastest-rising boys' names are:

1. Otis

2. Rupert

3. Vincent

4. Jasper

5. Alfred

6. Theodore

7. Felix

8. Arthur

9. Louis

10. Ralph

A comparable trend is evident amongst boys' names. Otis has surged 188 places since 2015, and much like Ottilie, carries the meaning of "wealth" or "prosperity".

Rupert, a name of Germanic origin meaning "bright glory", takes second spot in the boys' rankings.

Looking across both boys' and girls' names, a number of the fastest-climbing choices were outside the top 100 just a decade ago. This indicates the shift isn't simply down to well-loved classics making a comeback, but rather names with a distinctly traditional or 'old money' character gaining broader appeal.

Kirsty Carroll, parenting expert at Kiddies Kingdom, said: "With 'quiet luxury' taking over trends in fashion and interiors, it's interesting to see a similar preference for heritage and tradition reflected in the names parents are choosing for their children. That wider 'old money' aesthetic feels much more visible now than it did a decade ago."
