In 1996, Britain was riding a wave of cultural confidence. Britpop bands like Oasis, Blur and Pulp dominated the charts, Euro 96 brought football fever to the nation, and London was shaping a new era of British fashion and style. And in the middle of all that was Jack.


The year saw Jack being Britains most popular baby name for boys, given to more than 10,000 boys in just 12 months as reported by the Office for National Statistics. The name Jack has medieval English roots, developing as a nickname for John through forms such as the Middle English Jankin and the Dutch Janke. Over time, Jack evolved into a popular given name in its own right.


But Jacks story didnt end in 1996. The name has remained hugely popular across generations and remains a familiar favourite today.


While there is no exact global count of everyone named Jack, estimates suggest that hundreds of thousands of people- 417,000 to 678,000 - named Jack live in the United States alone, with the name remaining widely used across the UK, Ireland, Australia and other English-speaking countries.
