Coronation Street fans spot major change to famous street after 44 years

Eagle-eyed Corrie viewers were quick to spot a major change to the famous street in Weatherfield

Coronation Street fans were quick to spot a major change to the famous street, which has since been revealed to have been made after 44 years.

Its been more than 65 years since viewers were introduced to the fictional Salford streets that make up Weatherfield. The first episode of Corrie aired on December 9, 1960, and was filmed at a purpose-built set inside Studio 2 at Granada Studios on Quay Street.

Beforehand, the ITV soap's creator, Tony Warren, had trawled the streets of Salford to find what he thought would be the perfect street upon which to model his creation, eventually choosing Archie Street, which has since been demolished.

For decades, Corrie was filmed in Manchester city centre, before its production relocated and its iconic set was demolished. But it's been 13 years since filming of the long-running soap moved to Media City, situated on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford.

The new set was created to be bigger than the previous ones, and for the first time, allowed two cars down the street at any one time. But Corrie remained best known for its traditional, early 20th-century red-brick terraced houses, and iconic locations such as the Rovers Return and Roy's Rolls.

While the Street has remained much the same in that time, during Tuesday's (August 18) edition of Corrie, fans noticed a subtle change had been debuted to No.7 Coronation Street. The middle house of the iconic street has an interesting history, as the original Edwardian house collapsed in 1965, when occupied by Mr Wormold.

It wasn't until Len Fairclough purchased the site in 1981 that the house was rebuilt and made habitable. More than four decades on and the current owner is Dev Alahan, after he bought the property from Maria Connor back in 2010.

And it was in the latest episode that Corrie fans spotted a change to the property's exterior. @lewispringle said: "The outside of No. 7 is now dark pink??? Would Len Fairclough have approved? #corrie." @Rurz commented: "Just noticed Dev and Bernies new front door and windows have made their debut! #Corrie."

@ConversationStr replied: "Spotted that earlier too! No storyline reasons... Dev just did it. Much like the scaffolding outside the corner shop!" @ThomasR14336083 shared: "Love the colour, really stands out. Dev & Bernie have been busy decorating off screen when we haven't seen them. Very Bernie style."

Meanwhile, Corrie tour guide @ShaunInBrum addedL "A new look number 7 Coronation Street debuted today. Fun fact, this was updated in June (with advance filming) on the same week that Len Fairclough was seen completing the outside of the then new house with a lick of paint in June 82. That front door lasted 44 years! #Corrie."
