Lewis Capaldi has hit out at "bizarre" celebrities, who claimed they checked in on him after he was forced to retreat from the limelight for two years.

In 2023, the Scottish star, 28, ended his Glastonbury performance on the Pyramid Stage in tears as he experienced pronounced tics and lost his voice, leading the audience to step in to help him finish his final song in a gesture of solidarity.

A few days later, Lewis announced he was taking a break from the spotlight to get his "physical and mental health in order" and "adjust to the impact" of his Tourette's diagnosis.

During an interview on the This Past Weekend podcast with Theo Von , the star reflected: "Because Glastonbury is such a big stage, it was the first time people outside my shows had seen it. When I came off stage it was weird, I had this (feeling) 'everything's alright now, I can actually go and get help and fix myself for the next two years.'"

He continued: "In a weird way, it's probably the best thing that's ever happened to me. I wouldn't have stopped otherwise. Someone upstairs was like 'this has to happen now otherwise...' I don't want to think of where I would be now if I'd continued."

Thankfully, the Survive star is now back in business and brought the house down when he returned to Glastonbury this summer. However, when asked on Hits Radio whether he'd been supported by his fellow celebrities during his break from music, Lewis hesitated before host, Will Best, said, awkwardly: "I guess you find out who your friends are."

Revealing that he was contacted by Sir Elton John and One Direction's Niall Horan, Lewis said: "After the first Glastonbury, I got a call from Elton John, who said it was a great idea to take a break and stuff like that. Niall Horan, obviously. I'm in group chats with Niall, so I speak to him quite a lot."

However, claiming some famous faces had falsely claimed they had checked in on him, he continued: "There were some people who said they checked in on me, who did not check in on me. "

When asked to name and shame, Lewis, insisted that he couldn't, but did concede that their behaviour was "bizarre".

In June, the plucky Scot was revealed as the name behind the mysterious "TBA" slot on the main stage at the Glastonbury festival in Somerset.

The star's name flashed up on the video screen behind the stage to a huge roar of support from his legion of loyal fans. Looking happy and relaxed, the star strolled onto the stage, took in the view and raised a peace sign to the sky.

"Second time's a charm on this one," he told the crowd during his performance before adding: "I just wanted to come and finish what I couldn't finish last time."

The short set went off without a hitch and featured the first live performance of Lewis' stirring single, Survive.
