Madness frontman Suggs has dismissed concerns for his health after he stumbled in the extreme heat at a music festival at the beginning of the weekend. The iconic ska band were among the performers taking to the stage at the 2026 Boomtown Fair Festival in Hampshire over the weekend.
While Saturday has seen temperatures finally dip in the UK after weeks of heatwave weather, the mercury was at 36 centigrade on Friday when Madness took to the stage at the music event at the Matterly Estate. And fans grew concerned when they saw 65-year-old frontman Suggs appear uneasy on his feet at the event.
The Baggy Trousers singer, whose real name is Graham McPherson, was dressed in a black suit and blazer in the dazzling sunshine and struggled to remain standing as he addressed the crowds. He thanked fans for attending the event and enduring the "boiling" weather.
However, he appeared uneasy, and fellow band members and backstage staff had to rush to him to guide him to a chair. Once seated, he was swaddled in towels to cool him, while an umbrella served as a parasol to shield him from the blinding rays.
The star went on to complete his set, sitting throughout. On Saturday, Suggs took to social media to share a message with fans via the official Madness Instagram page. Assuring fans that he was alright, he wrote: "It was incredible opening the Lions Den at Boomtown yesterday. Slightly on the warm side."
And he added: "Looking forward to seeing you all at the shows this weekend. Thanks to everyone who came in the heat." He shared a statement while uploading a snap from the festival.
The image was taken from the back of the stage, showing Suggs sitting in his chair with the stage hand holding the orange umbrella-cum-parasol above him, shading him from the sunshine. The image also captured the hundreds of revellers who had turned out to see him and the chart-topping band perform.
His update came after music fans shared their concerns about the singer's health. One attendee told The Sun: After coming back from an interlude he was swaying and the bands entourage were clearly concerned.
A lot of the crowd started leaving before they even got to the big hits. Then halfway through a transition to another song it looked like he was about to collapse."
They explained further: "He blamed a double knee replacement at first, then the heat but Im not convinced. He managed to get through the set, but was sitting down and had people bringing him towels and shielding him with an umbrella.
Madness have had an impressive career which stretches all the way back to the 1970s. Their hits include the singles Our House, Driving In My Car, and the number one smash House of Fun.
Debut album One Step Beyond... hit number 2 in the charts when it was released in 1979 - but it wasn't until 2023 that the band secured their first ever number one studio album. The record, titled Theatre of the Absurd Presents C'est la Vie, was a critical and commercial success for the band.
