An American couple currently in the UK have declared a 5.5 mile walking route in the Cotswolds "the best" and "most beautiful" hike they've ever done. The region's remarkable array of stunning landscapes and scenery has earned it the prestigious designation of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Celebrated for its peaceful charm, the Cotswolds is renowned for its idyllic homes and buildings constructed in local Jurassic limestone, alongside its vast network of walking trails, welcoming country pubs and variety of food venues, local markets, independent boutiques and much more. It's a paradise for tourists and ramblers in equal measure.
American couple Katie and Anthony Kay have garnered hundreds of thousands of likes on TikTok through their popular videos showcasing their travelling adventures. Of late, they've been immersing themselves in the Cotswolds and sharing their experiences with their followers.
In one clip, they gave their verdict on the "circular walk" from Bourton-on-the-Water to Upper and Lower Slaughter, declaring it "a must for a first time visit to the Cotswolds."
According to Explore the Cotswolds, the route takes walkers "along the banks of the Rivers Windrush and Eye, past historic churches, stone cottages, mills and manor houses".
The trail begins in Bourton-on-the-Water, a charming village that has earned the nickname the "Venice of the Cotswolds" owing to its stunning riverside location. The village's appeal extends well beyond its picturesque scenery, with attractions including the Cotswold Motoring Museum, the Model Village, and the famed wildlife destination, Birdland Park and Gardens.
The route then winds towards the tranquil and compact village of Upper Slaughter, which is equally steeped in history. Despite its rather ominous-sounding name, Explore the Cotswolds clarifies it's "just a mispronunciation of the Old English word 'slothre' which means 'muddy' or 'miry' place", a reference to the River Eye that flows through both Upper and Lower Slaughter.
Narrating their experience in the footage, Katie said: "Let's just say this walk did not start out the way we thought it would," as the pair approached the route from the "end" rather than the designated starting point - though as it's a circular trail, it wasn't a "huge deal".
Upon completing the 5.5-mile "loop", the couple were "exhausted" but agreed the "beautiful" walk was thoroughly "worth it".
In the caption accompanying their video, they shared tips and advice. Describing it as "the best walk in the Cotswolds", they wrote: "It is a loop trail of 5.5 miles total and takes roughly 2.5 hours with occasional stops. The route is beginner friendly, with only a few moments of slight incline."
They went on to say: "Use a walk/hiking app, there are OS Maps, AllTrails, Wikiloc, and many more. We made the assumption that the signage would be extremely clear where to start the walk and while there are plenty of signs along the trail, the beginning was a bit less obvious. There is also a stretch of busy main road to be aware of as well."
Katie and Anthony also cautioned: "There aren't a ton of shops, toilets or water bottle refill points so bring a snack and a full water bottle."
The comments section was filled with people eager to share their views. One person said: "What a beautiful walk."
Another said: "Okay but this is gorg." A third agreed: "this is beautiful", prompting Katie to respond: "It really is one of the most beautiful walks I've ever been on!"
