Scones are a quintessential British treat, served with lashings of jam and cream. Getting the perfect rise and bake can be tricky, but one Bake Off star revealed a handy and unusual substitute home bakers can use to make them.
Former Great British Bake Off contestant and baker Briony May Williams revealed a creative method for making scones without the need for eggs and butter. In a TikTok series, Briony has been putting a variety of ingredients to the test.
When making scones from ingredients with the letter j, many suggested the likes of jalapenos and jam, but ultimately she settled on jelly. Although the idea sounded fun, Briony was convinced that jelly could not be made into a scone.
Putting the suggestion to the test, she used Hartley's Strawberry Jelly. As the cupboard staple costs 2 for a pack of four at Tesco, the alternative just costs 50p.
She said: I dont think its gonna work, I think this is gonna be a scone fail But I really want to try cause if it does work, this will be so fun.

You wont even need eggs and butter to make the scone dough, as the jelly will provide enough moisture on its own. Simply mix the jelly and flour together to make the dough, thats all it takes.
Once the dough is formed and cut into quarters, top with a coating of milk. To Brionys surprise, jelly can be used to make scones with a delicious fluffy texture.
Despite the fluffy texture, one of the downsides to using jelly is that the scones looked very pale in colour. Briony said: Theyre about the palest scones Ive ever seen, look theyre so pale.
The baker described them as looking like ghost scones. Briony continued: It really smells like jelly. This is amazing.
That tastes so nice, that tastes so good. It tastes like the jelly, its so delicious. The only thing that would make that is little chunks of jelly in the scone.
Brionys video has been viewed over 7,804 times, receiving 716 likes and 99 comments. Nic wrote in the comments: I'll be honest, I didn't think this one would work but I stand corrected!
Another said: I didnt have high hopes for this one but I may need to try this one too.
Sandie suggested: You could chop up jelly babies and mix them in.
So if youre looking for a fun twist on a classic bake, heres how you can recreate jelly scones at home.
