In London now, a standard portion of fish and chips typically costs between 12 and 22. While local takeaway shops average around 14 to 18 and sit-down restaurants or famous spots can charge 20 or more. However, in the suburbs, this may be slightly cheaper. This often prices people out of getting a takeaway, and will mean more are opting to make their own versions at home.
But it's still double what one man managed to get a chippy tea for in Liverpool, and, what's more, is he also got peas and a can with his food, making it a really filling deal.
For just 5, he "genuinely didn't think deals like this still existed," as he visited Heritage Fish and Chips on Great Howard Street in Liverpool.
Jerome Griffin, who runs the TikTok account @thescouseghettogourmet, makes a habit of supporting local businesses by dropping in and posting honest reviews.
When he rocked up to Heritage chippy, he was absolutely delighted by what he found. Jerome discovered a daily specials board, where punters can snap up a variety of tasty meals each day for just a fiver.
For those mindful of food hygiene standards, Jerome was happy to report the establishment had been awarded a top rating of five.
There are "loads of places to sit" if you fancy dining in, and the menu is impressively varied. Jerome visited on a Friday, so he went straight for the fiver fish and chips deal, throwing in a sausage on the side for good measure.
He also opted to sample two varieties of curry Chinese curry and Irish fruity declaring the latter "lovely".
Jerome revealed the fish batter was incredibly crispy, while the inside was exactly as it should be flakey and moist.
As he tucked in, he declared he was "so happy right now" with his meal. "For a fiver you know," Jerome gushed.
"I can't stop saying it because I can't believe it. I even had enough money to go and get myself a little barm," he revealed, before loading it up with fish and drowning it in curry sauce, then closing it up.
Jerome reckoned the flavours were spot on, and he was thoroughly impressed by the chippy, vowing to return.
In the comments section, one person wrote: "My son and I came here a couple of weeks ago, they were absolutely lovely! They gave him a sausage while he was waiting for free, so to an autistic child this is everything. It was gorgeous."
Another pointed out how handy the location is for those "going to Everton," given its proximity to the football ground.
"That looks banging, I want to try," a third wrote, while a fourth remarked: "This would've been a belter deal pre-Covid, let alone in 2026."
