Electric car with longest range in UK named not a Tesla, Ford or Audi

Although the ranges of many electric cars are now massive, there are still concerns about range anxiety and the cost of charging the vehicles as the car with the longest range in the UK was named

Electric car technology has come a long way since the first mass produced electric cars hit the marked more than 100 years ago. In the beginning their ranges were only double figures in terms of miles, but now they stretch well into triple figures.

This giant leap came after the start of the electric car renaissance in the 2010s and now electric cars have predicted ranges very similar, if not larger, than petrol or diesel cars.

Some electric cars can, according to the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure), now do over the equivalent of London to Edinburgh (around 400 miles).

Auto Express has put together a list of the electric cars with the furthest ranges on sale in the UK. At the top of the list is the 105,000 Mercedes EQS with an WLTP combined range of 542 miles.

This came ahead of the 64,860 Volvo X60 which had a range of 503 miles and the 60,655 BMW iX3 that had a combined range of 500 miles.

The Mercedes EQS, which was first released in 2021, was praised for its giant battery and aerodynamic shape that help it move through the air effectively and efficiently.

Auto Express remarked: Of course, the EQS is a high end luxury saloon equivalent to the famous petrol Mercedes S-Class and prices starting from well over 100,000 reflect that.

Optional steer-by-wire tech means theres no physical connection between the steering and the wheels but it allows a super-tight turning circle for such a large car.

However, one of the reasons why the range of electric cars is still such a big focus despite their range is because people are still worried about running out of charge.

Despite some petrol cars having lower ranges than electric cars, range anxiety remains a factor for Britons who sometimes opt for hybrids so they can have zero emissions driving without that anxiety.

Another factor is cost. In the same way filling your car with petrol is more expensive on the motorway, so too can filling your car up with electricity. As the cost of living crisis squeezes motorists yet further, this may be a major factor to consider as more people choose staycations over foreign holidays.

However MFG, one of the UKs largest electric car charging operators, has decided to cut the prices of many of its chargers from 79p/kWh to 59p/kWh; a drop of over 20 percent.

Speaking about the decision, the EV director at MFG Martin Symes said: This summer price drop is our commitment to British EV drivers: we are putting you first, cutting our ultra-rapid charging rate to just 59p/kWh so that your summer journeys are cheaper, greener, and hassle-free.

With thousands of chargers across the UK and now one of the lowest rapid-charging prices in the country, there has never been a smarter time to go electric.
