American in the UK visits Argos for the first time and sums it up in 2 words

An American woman living in the UK with her English husband visited Argos for the very first time - and used just two words to describe the unique high street shop

Argos is a high street staple in the UK, but those visiting from other countries have no idea about the retailer or its unique shopping model. The shop exclusively operates in the United Kingdom, and while it did have physical stores in the Republic of Ireland, all 34 locations were closed in 2023, so it's a mystery to anyone visiting or moving from abroad.

We Brits will know all about Argos and its somewhat bizarre model, which sees shoppers browse a catalogue for items rather than picking them out on shop shelves. But one American woman on social media recently had her mind blown when she stepped into the high street shop for the very first time with her English partner. This comes as another American living in the UK shared the three reasons he would never move back to the US.

Brit, an American woman, has been in a relationship with her English husband, Tom, for 18 years. However, their family-of-six lived in the US until earlier this year, when the couple decided to move back across the pond.

And in a recent video posted to Instagram, Brit explained that Tom had taken her and their children to Argos for the very first time - leaving her gobsmacked as she had never experienced anything like it before.

She said in her video: "I didn't even know this existed, and in the 18 years that Tom and I have been together, he has never brought me here. We're in Argos."

Tom then asked her to sum up what she thinks of the shop, and Brit, still struggling to process what she was seeing, could only manage two words: "So cool."

She then explained that when she first walked into the shop, she was so confused, as there were no products on display, and all she could see were rows of touch screens. Tom then told her that back in the day, they used to have physical catalogues that you could flip through, and everyone used to have a copy in their home.

He then said it's similar to Amazon, except it's a physical store so if they have the item that you want in stock, you can walk out with it the same day instead of waiting for it to be delivered.

Tom added: "I've intentionally never brought Brit into Argos, because it's just an endless screen of 'let's just get stuff'. If you thought next-day Amazon was dangerous, this is immediate Amazon."

Brit then filmed herself looking at items in the digital catalogue, but was left disappointed when she realised that Argos doesn't sell quite the endless range of products that giants like Amazon do. The magic of Argos particularly vanished when she learnt that while Argos does have a small section for clothing, it is more geared toward electronics, appliances, and children's toys.

After Tom told her she wouldn't find a huge range of handbags in the catalogue, Brit said: "Well, that's less exciting."

Commenters on the couple's video were filled with nostalgia over their trip to Argos, as many reminisced on flipping through the physical catalogue when they were younger and picking out toys they wanted for Christmas and birthdays.

One person said: "I miss the catalogue. Not the same online."

Another added: "My younger son basically learnt to read from the Argos catalogue - he used to tear out the toy section and take it on holiday, highlighting in coloured pens what he wanted for Christmas!"

A third wrote: "I live in Canada now, and we don't have anything similar either - I really miss Argos!"
