Next is a retailer frequently celebrated by parents for its charming children's clothing, boasting delightful prints and patterns to suit virtually every age group, from babies to teens. However, one mortified mum was left completely lost for words after noticing an unfortunate detail on a pair of trousers she'd purchased for her one year old boy.
North East mum Lauren, who regularly documents her journey as a first-time mother on TikTok, shared a clip of the much-talked-about Next juice box trousers she'd ordered for her son. Having been over the moon about tracking down the sold-out bottoms in his size, her excitement quickly turned to bewilderment upon clocking one particular element of the design.
"I was so excited to get my hands on the viral Next trousers for William until I opened the parcel and realised the pattern had lined up in a really unfortunate way on the seam and he definitely can't wear them," she wrote in the caption of the post.
The trousers themselves were brown, adorned with a pattern of assorted coloured juice boxes, complete with illustrated berries. Several of the cartons were also labelled with their flavour, including mango, berry, apple, and grape.
As she panned across the garment, Lauren showcased the full design before zooming in once more on the problematic area she'd discovered.
On one of the trouser legs, the pattern had sliced directly through the grape juice box graphic, cutting off the opening letter of the word and creating an altogether more inappropriate one in its place.
"Next viral trousers fail," she wrote in the overlay text of the video. She then urged other parents to take a closer look at the trousers, adding: "If you've picked up a pair of these make sure you check how the grape juice lines up before your little one wears them!"
A spokesperson from Next said: "We first became aware of this issue via TikTok at the beginning of the week. During the development process, we did not see any samples indicating this unintentional production error could occur.
"All offending stock has been removed from sale. We are very sorry if this mistake caused any offence."
Viewers quickly flooded the comments section with their reactions, with many finding it just as unfortunate as Lauren, while others rushed to inspect their own pairs of the trousers.
"Once you see it you can't unsee it can you," one person wrote. Another added: "Oh god!! I love these but that's definitely a big mistake. I'd email next and see if they can help.
"I saw another TikTok on here with these and that was the first thing I saw, such a shame as they're so cute!!" a third viewer commented.
A fourth person offered an alternative solution, suggesting: "Just unpick that side seam and put out the print a bit more. Then stitch it back up."
Another viewer chimed in, writing: "Yes I do agree but surely people can use common sense and see it's clearly GRAPE if parents see a problem sadly it there own issue is a mother of 2 myself I clearly see it's meant to say grape but each to the own I suppose."
Numerous other commenters also noted that their own versions of the trousers didn't feature the same 'mistake', leading Lauren to conclude she had simply been unlucky with the fabric cutting.
