Need to know: NHS GP and TV doctor Amir Khan offers vital advice on common medications
- TV doctor Amir Khan has warned people taking common medications about potential side effects they should watch out for.
- The NHS GP, who regularly appears on ITV's This Morning and Lorraine, shared advice about five widely prescribed drugs in an Instagram post. He explained: "When we prescribe medication, in our heads, we're always weighing up potential benefits versus risk of side effects."
- Dr Khan highlighted that metformin, used for type 2 diabetes, can cause stomach problems including diarrhoea and nausea when first started. He said these symptoms often settle after a few weeks but alternatives are available.
- Acid reflux medications like lansoprazole and omeprazole can reduce absorption of nutrients like vitamin B12 and magnesium if taken long-term. Iron tablets can cause constipation and turn stools black, while heart medication bisoprolol may cause tiredness and dizziness.
- Salbutamol inhalers can make hands shaky and cause heart racing, but Dr Khan warned regular use suggests asthma isn't well controlled. He said: "If you're getting side effects from your medicine, don't suffer in silence and don't just suddenly stop taking them without speaking to your GP."
- On Bisoprolol he said: "We use this for things like high blood pressure. pressure, heart problems, and palpitations because it slows down the heart. Some people notice they're more tired than usual, feel dizzy when they stand up, or have cold hands and feet.
- The doctor stressed that healthcare providers can often adjust doses or find alternatives that work better for patients.
