A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 16-year-old boy was shot in Birmingham.
The incident happened in Bowyer Road near St Saviours Road in the Alum Rock area of the city shortly before 5.30pm yesterday.
Police say that although the boy was shot near a mosque, they do not believe the incident to be connected to this place of worship at this stage.
Officers were called to the scene and the boy was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
Last night, a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody, West Midlands Police said.
Detective Inspector Francis Nock from the force's Major Crime Team said: "Our investigation is continuing and I would urge anyone who might have seen something or has dashcam or doorbell footage to get in touch.
"Officers will be in the area today to offer reassurance to the local community."
In an earlier statement, the police said: "Our investigation is at an early stage, and officers remain at the scene carrying out forensic and CCTV enquiries, and speaking to people in the area.
"We understand this is extremely worrying for people in the area, and local officers will be remaining there to speak to anyone with concerns."
