A six-year-old girl has died and another child is in hospital after a crash between a lorry and a car in Essex.
The incident took place on the A12 near Colchester, on the northbound carriageway close to junction 28, yesterday morning. The six-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second child is still in hospital after sustaining a leg injury.
No arrests were made at the scene and the lorry driver passed all road-side tests. He will be interviewed in the coming days, Essex Police said.
All emergency services were called to the scene as the road remained closed in both directions. Detective Inspector Mark Fraser explained that the police are now working to establish the circumstances of the crash, Essex Live reports.
He said: "First and foremost, my thoughts are very much with this young childs family and wider loved ones. We have specialist officers in place with them to ensure they are given as much support as possible.
"Our investigation is progressing and we will be interviewing a driver of a lorry in the coming days. Incidents such as this are clearly sensitive and complex and we are committed to fully understanding the circumstances around what happened yesterday.
