Terror police investigate Manchester school stabbing after girl, 14, arrested

Greater Manchester Police continue to investigate the stabbing at Co-op Academy in Blackley, north Manchester, after which a 14-year-old girl was arrested

Terror police have taken lead on an investigation into a school stabbing which led to a 14-year-old girl being arrested.

But officers have today stressed the attack is not being treated as a terror attack at this stage. The Mirror is working to establish why this is the case.

A teacher and two pupils were stabbed at the Co-op Academy in Blackley, north Manchester, on Tuesday morning. The 14-year-old girl was detained under the Mental Health Act and arrested on suspicion of assault. She was released to police custody following an assessment by a mental health professional.

In an update on Thursday night, Counter Terrorism Policing North West said a 14-year-old schoolgirl has now been charged with three counts of attempted murder.

While Greater Manchester Police shared an update on Thursday evening that Counter Terrorism Policing are now leading the investigation, they added it has not been declared a terrorist incident.

The force said Counter Terrorism Policing North West have taken lead in the probe following further enquiries. Greater Manchester Police said searches remain ongoing and added that "counter terrorism detectives are keeping an open mind to the motivation of the attack".

Chief Superintendent David Meeney, Commander for Manchester, said: "Our local detectives have been investigating this incident at pace ever since we arrested a schoolgirl suspect on Tuesday morning. She remains in custody in Manchester.

"This has included ensuring the suspect is checked by health professionals to make an assessment while under the Mental Health Act, and to explore all available evidence to understand why this incident took place.

"Since our last update, further information has come to light that we have made Counter Terrorism Policing North West aware of. I know this update will only continue to make our local community concerned by Tuesdays events.

"There is no information to indicate any further threat, and our local officers continue to be in the area. We are here to listen and to act, so please speak to our officers with any concerns."

A hero school teacher who was stabbed in the neck as he tried to protect pupils as the school went into lockdown has been named. Maysum Abdullah, 27, was taken to hospital with a neck wound after the incident.

His wife Samia shared a video on TikTok thanking people for their support after the incident. She said: "No one ever expects to receive a phone call telling them that their loved one has been taken to the hospital after being stabbed. I am grateful that his injuries were not life threatening. The wound on his neck and his hand have been treated, however these physical wounds are only part of what our family is now facing."

She added: "Thank you to all colleagues, family, friends, hospital staff, the police and members of the community for their support, kindness and wishes during this difficult time."
