A Tesco security guard who choked on a doughnut and collapsed while at work has died.

Mohamed Nassar, 57, was working at the Manchester Bailey Tesco Express store on New Bailey Street in Salford when the incident took place. He was eating a doughnut in order to take some medicine when he choked on it and collapsed on the shop floor, leaving his fellow staff members and customers "screaming".

Mohamed was resuscitated by paramedics before he was taken to hospital but he was left severely brain damaged as his heart stopped for 23 minutes. Despite his family's hopes, the father-of-three never regained consciousness and had his ventilation withdrawn 44 days after the May 8 incident, passing away on Sunday, June 21.

His family told Manchester Evening News: "We are all absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the loss of Mohamed Nassar. His passing has left a huge void in our family, and we are still struggling to come to terms with what has happened.

"Before he passed, our dad spent 44 days fighting, and it was incredibly hard for us to see him like that. Throughout those difficult days, we held onto hope and never stopped believing he would pull through."

Mohamed and his family moved to Ardwick in Manchester from London in 2020. Previously a musician, the father-of-three was employed by a third party security company for whom he had worked for about five years.

His 23 year-old son Seif Abdelwaneis said his mum, Nancy Elkarnshawy, and his sisters Nariman, 28, and Malak, 14, were left in a state of shock when they received a phone call telling them he had collapsed at work. The family said they were "overwhelmed" by the "love, prayers and support from so many people" during his time in hospital and that they "want to sincerely thank everyone who kept him in their thoughts and prayers".

"Your kindness, encouragement, and support meant so much to us during the hardest time of our lives," they said in their statement issued following his death. They continued: "As a family, we are not only grieving but are also facing significant financial difficulties as a result of this tragedy.

"We continue to search for legal assistance and support but have unfortunately had little luck to date. Above all, we want people to remember him for the wonderful person he was.

"He was deeply loved by his family and friends, and his loss is felt every day. We miss him terribly and will carry his memory with us always."

Manager of the Manchester Bailey Express Tesco store, Osarugue Onaghise, has also paid tribute to Mohamed. A statement read: "On behalf of all our colleagues at our Manchester Bailey Express store, we remain deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Mohamed. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this difficult time."

A fundraiser was set up by Mohamed's family while he was in hospital, with the proceeds now due to go towards the grandfather's funeral costs and supporting the family financially as they mourn their loss.

The description of the fundraising page reads: "Mohamed was 57 years old, a devoted husband, a loving father of three, and a proud new grandad. He was a kind, caring, and selfless person who loved his family more than anything.

"He had a way of bringing people together, always making time for others, and touching the lives of everyone he met. Anyone who knew Mohamed knew how much love he had to give, and how deeply he was loved in return."
