Weather forecasting models show the UK could see the hottest day of the year so far next week.

The current temperature record for 2026 stands at 37.7C, which came on June 26 in Lingwood, Norfolk. However, temperatures could rise past 37C again next week, data suggests.

The GFS weather model shows maximum temperatures reaching 34C on Wednesday next week in southern England, in an area stretching from Gloucestershire to Surrey. South Wales could hit 31C, while the Midlands may rise as high as 33C.

Highs of 36C are possible quite widely across western and southern England on Thursday next week, the model shows, with temperatures climbing to 33C in areas as far north as Yorkshire, and 28C in southern parts of Scotland.

Western England and south-east England could then see highs of at least 37C on Friday next week. The model shows 36C is possible quite widely across central England and southern areas.

For Saturday next week, maps show potential highs of 36C in East Anglia, 33C in Yorkshire, 36C in the south-east, and 33-34C in the Midlands. This hot spell would constitute another official heatwave across the four days.

Temperature anomaly maps for next week show the UK shaded in areas of deep red. This indicates where temperatures will rise well above the seasonal average.

Met Office weather forecast

The Met Office says conditions could potentially turn very warm or hot again later this month. However, there is also the potential for some thundery interludes.

Article continues below

The Met Office forecast for August 9 to 18 states: Further into August, high pressure may become more dominant towards the north or northwest of the UK, with lower pressure to the south or east.

This means there is a greater chance of frontal systems or thundery interludes to affect southern and eastern areas in comparison to recent weeks, though rainfall amounts could be quite variable with some areas still seeing relatively little.

For the most part, temperatures look to remain above average, especially in the south, and perhaps turning very warm or hot.
