Caswell County shooting horror as three dead, including suspect, in North Carolina town

The Caswell County Sherriff's Office said officers found multiple people with gunshot wounds and says that three have died, including the suspect

Three people have been killed, including the suspect, in a horror mass shooting at a home in North Carolina.

The Caswell County Sherriff's Office said in a statement that officers responded to a "call for service" before 8am local time today (1pm UK time) in Brooks Road, Prospect Hill. Police said deputies found "multiple people who had been shot". It has since been confirmed that three people have died, including the suspect, and that everyone involved is an adult from the same family.

Another casualty was taken to Duke University Hospital, Durhham, the police said. An initial statement, released just before 7pm UK time, read: "Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden immediately requested the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

"SBI Crime scene investigators are on scene processing evidence and conducting interviews. There is NO THREAT to the general public, and the event is contained to the above address."

Footage from the scene shows a two-storey home surrounded by police tape with emergency services vehicles outside the property. Speaking to local broadcaster WFMY, Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden said there had been "multiple fatalities" and confirmed one person remained in hospital.

He said there are no outstanding suspects and stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public. Sheriff Durden declined to discuss a possible motive or say whether the shooting was linked to a domestic incident.

He also declined to say whether a weapon had been recovered or reveal what type of weapon was involved.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said in a statement: "The Caswell County Sheriff's Office has requested the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau Of Investigation regarding an early morning mass shooting on Brooks Road in Prospect Hill, North Carolina.

"This event occurred around 8:30 AM. Caswell Deputies and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol immediately responded. There is no threat to the general public at this time.

"The Castle [sic] County sheriff's office is working to gather the facts of the case. No additional information is available at this time."

Prospect Hill is a small community in the north of North Carolina, located on the southeast coast of the United States. According to data provided by Mass Shooting Tracker, there have been 339 mass shootings so far this year, including the one in North Carolina today.
