Iran war oil RECAP: Trump makes 'Death, Fire and Fury' threat as price fears grow

The head of Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabias state-owned oil company and the largest exporter of oil in the world, has said the war is the "biggest crisis" that the region's oil and gas industry has ever faced.

Amin Nasser told an earnings call that there will be "catastrophic consequences" for the worlds oil markets if the disruption in shipping continues in the Strait of Hormuz.

There have been two explosions in Tehran, according to AFP journalists in the Iranian capital.

It comes shortly after Israeli forces announced they had begun a wave of strikes on the city.

Israel's ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, has said Israeli forces are "ahead of schedule on the war objectives".

He told BFMTV that Israel anticipates the war to last "a few weeks...hasn't changed". "How many weeks exactly I can't tell you", he said.

Asked about the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran's new supreme leader, Zarka said he is not "who the Iranians wanted to choose".

"Theyve [the Assembly of Experts] chosen someone but we dont know what his goals are or what his relationship with the Revolutionary Guards is," Zarka said. "If he continues to follow the same path of his father, he will also be added to the list of those who must be eliminated."

President Donald Trump has said the US is considering easing some oil sanctions to combat rising prices.

"We have sanctions on some countries. We're going to take those sanctions off till this straightens out," Trump told reporters at a news briefing yesterday. "Then, who knows? Maybe we wont have to put them on therell be so much peace." He did not specify which countries might be affected.

Trump said in the same briefing that he had had a "very good call" with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he said "wants to be helpful" with the conflict in Iran.

News outlet Al Jazeera has reported that the Israeli army has increased its presence along the border with Lebanon and within Lebanese territory.

The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that the Israeli government is discussing the possibility of expanding its presence in the southern part of Lebanon.

It has been reported that energy infrastructure across the Middle East has been the target of Iranian strikes.

Lebanons National News Agency has reprted that Israeli warplanes have carried out attacks across Lebanon overnight.

It is understood that areas hit include Rihane Chaqra, Srifa and Ain el-Tineh heights.

Hezbollah says rockets have been fired at a site in northern Israel in the early hours of the morning.

It has been reported that the Iranian women's football team have left the hotel where they were staying in Australia.

It is understood that Iranian activists lay down on the pavement outside the hotel to block the path of a bus driving the players.

Despite asking the competition watchdog to prevent wartime profiteering, the Chancellor resisted calls to cancel a planned increase in fuel duty in response to the oil price spike.

Fuel duty has been frozen since 2011, and was cut by 5p in 2022 in response to Russias full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

At her budget last year, Ms Reeves said the 5p cut would be unwound between September 2026 and March 2027, but the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have called for her to change course.

Shadow chancellor Sir Mel Stride said: The latest developments in the Middle East make it even more important for Rachel Reeves to reverse course and scrap the rise in fuel duty she announced at the budget.

An airstrike hit a camp for Iran-backed militias in northern Iraq early Tuesday, killing at least five people.

The attack also wounded four other militants, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

The Saudi Defense Ministry said it has destroyed two drones over the kingdoms oil-rich eastern region.

The National Guard in Kuwait said it shot down six drones attacking the countys northern and southern areas.

Mr Trump wrote in a post on social media that "Death, Fire, and Fury will reign upon" Iran if the country stops the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz.

About 20% of the world's oil passes through the Straits of Hormuz. The global oil price of a barrel jumped over $100 on Monday, March 9.

Five members of the Iranian women's football team have been granted humanitarian visas in Australia.

This comes after the team was eliminated from the Asian Cup, the Australian government said.

Donald Trump was questioned about an earlier comment he made on having someone in mind to lead Iran.

He said: "I like the idea of internal and eternal. They talk about the son of the Shah [exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi], they talk about other people.

"But [he] hasn't been there in many, many years. We have a formula that's been very good so far, and I think it will continue to be good."

Trump has just taken questions from reporters at the press conference. Asked if he thinks the Iran war will be over this week, he replies: "I think so."

"Everything they have is gone, including their leadership. In fact, there are two levels of leadership, and as it turns out, more than that," he said. "But two levels of leadership are gone."

Speaking on Mojtaba Khamenei's appointment as the new leader, he said: "I was disappointed because we think it's going to lead to just more of the same problem for the country. So I was disappointed to see their choice."

A siren has been sounded in Bahrain, the country's Ministry of Interior said. "Citizens and residents are urged to remain calm and head to the nearest safe place," it warned in a post on X.

Trump claims an attack by Iran was imminent and that the US stepped in "with good timing."

Iran was "going to take over the Middle East" if the US didn't launch strikes, he told the press conference. "Since their last hit, they had thousands and thousands of missiles. Most are now destroyed. But they were going to take over the Middle East."

He adds: "We're very proud to be involved in this, and it's going to be ended soon. And if it starts up again, they'll be they'll be hit even harder."

Donald Trump says the US military wants to keep "energy and oil flowing to the world".

He adds: "I will not allow a terrorist regime to hold the world hostage and attempt to stop the globe's oil supply, and if Iran does anything to do that, they'll get hit at a much, much harder level.

"We're putting an end to all of this threat once and for all, and the result will be lower oil and gas prices for American families. We've done that. We've brought it very low. This was just an excursion into something that had to be done."

Trump says more than 5,000 Iranian targets have been hit - and that the rest could be taken out by the US "in one day".

He says: "I would say that we probably would not have thought after a month we'd be here."

He claims the US military has wiped out every single force in Iran. "Their drones are way down," he says. Trump also claims the US is hitting all of the places Iran manufactures their drones and missiles, one after another.

Five members of the Iranian women's football team have been granted asylum in Australia, a government minister has confirmed.

Australia's home affairs minister Tony Burke said the women were provided with humanitarian visas. "I say to the other members of the team the same opportunity is there," Burke added.

Earlier, Donald Trump told Australia to grant Iranian footballers asylum as "they will most likley be killed" if forced back to Iran. He added that the US would take the players if Australia does not.

He later backtracked, saying some of the players would want to return to Iran as they fear for the safety of their families.

Grieving family members of the US soldiers killed in the Iran war told Trump "make sure you win sir," when he went to Dover air force base to pay his respects, he said. He called the visit "the hardest thing to do".

"They all said one thing to me - 'Make sure you win sir'. They weren't playing games," Trump said. He added that the US had "already won in many ways, but we haven't won enough".
