Mount Etna: Watch as Europe's biggest volcano spews lava and smoke into the sky in latest eruption

This footage shows the terrifying power of Mount Etna as Europe's biggest volcano erupts once again.

Etna threw tons of molten rock and a huge plume of thick black smoke into the night sky over Sicily after she began erupting on Saturday.

Airspace over the Italian island of Sicily was briefly closed after the eruption began.

The volcano's eruptions can sometimes last for days at a time.

The famous volcano, which stands at 3,295m high, regularly erupts, but most are short-lived.

Etna is in an almost constant state of activity, but is not considered particularly dangerous. The last major eruption took place in 1992.

The rich volcanic soil on the mountain slopes is home to many farms and vineyards.

Saturday's eruption did not require villages to be evacuated, but was preceded by a series of underground tremors on Friday, the Guardian reports.

In the 1970s Etna sent smoke rings into the sky one of the first captured events of this type. This extremely rare phenomenon happened again in 2000.
